    In 1866, the Civil Rights and the Freedman's Bureau bills were passed by Congress. They sent the bills over to President Johnson with hopes that he would sign them. He actually ended up vetoing them and completely destroying his relationship with Congress. This lead to his impeachment.

    The USS Maine was exploded in port in Havana, Cuba. Due to yellow journalism, this led to the Spanish American War. Journalists reported that it was blown up but it was really due to leaving gunpowder too close to a heating mechanism.

    The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was founded by W.E.B. Dubois. It is still around today and its primary purpose is to continue for equal justice for African Americans.

    President Woodrow Wilson was severely against joining WWI until there was a telegram from Zimmerman, of Germany, with plans to ally with Mexico and invade the U.S.
