  • Sand Creek Massacre

    Sand Creek Massacre
    PBS Sand Creek Massacre This massacre was between the Cheyenne Indians and the U.S. troops because of land disbutes. Black Kettle, the cheif, did not want to go to war but he and was assured no battle was coming, it occured the next day. This event is important because it is the beginning of the end for the Indians and this was the major start which resulted in Indian Reservations and total loss of their land.

    Transcontinental Railroad
    The First Transcontinental Railroad On this day, Leland Stanford, a represetative of the Central Pacific Railroad, hammered in the "Golden Spike" that marked the completion of the railroad. The railroad went from the one coast-line to the other. This event allowed for a mass spread of products and people throughout the country with more ease and less hassle. It created a more accessible America.

  • The Martinsburg Strike

    The Martinsburg Strike
    Strike of 1877The Baltimore & Ohhio Railroad Co. decreased payments by 10%, the second cuts in payment in less than a year. The workers were not willing to live with the pay cuts any longer and proclaimed that no train would leave Virginia until payment was restored. It took President Hayes to sent federal troops to stop the strike. This strike was the beeginning of the "Great Upheaval" where workers would not stand to let their employers treat them unjustly. This strike was the match that set the fire.

    Chinese Exclusion Act
    This act prohibited chinese people from entering into America. This was the first act to ban a particular ethnicity from coming into the country. This act was a product of "racial purists" who feared what the intergration of ethnicities would do to our country. From this point the Japanese were excluded and more and more exclusions were used to stop certain ethnic groups from becoming Americans with all of their rights.

    The Age of Imperialism Began after the territories of the Spanish-American War were aquired. Imperialism is "A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force."

(Google) Propaganda was a way to promote patriotism during WWI, using visual and vocal influences to turn the general public away from the enemy at a certain time.

    America and World War One After trying for so long to stay a neutral country President Wilson went to Congress to motion to join the Allied Powers, Britain, France, and Russia, in was was called the "Great War." Four days congress approved.

    Teenagers Before the 1920s people were eiter children or adults. A new catergory of people became known as teenagers. This catergory became a part of U.S. culture because people were waiting to get married and living their lives more outwardly than ever before. Beging a teenager was the in-between of being a child and becoming an adult.

    Immigration Act This act restricted the ethnicity and other human characteristics of people from immigrating into the United States. This act also restricted the number of people that were allowed to immigrate. This act also made sure that citizenship was unavailable to some ethnicities, mainly Asain. This act made it clear that the government was not going to let the natural change occur because they were afraid.

    Stock Market Crash of 1929 The day the stock market crashed was the beginning of the Great Depression. On Oct. 29th, hundreds stood on Wall Street watching as the stock market crashed. Many Americans lost all of their life savings and it took government help and many different plans to get the economy back to normal.

    Isolationism Isolationism-A policy of remaining apart from the affairs or interests of other groups, especially the political affairs of other countries. (google) Isolationism was what kept America out of WWII until 1941. Americans were still trying to get out of the Great Depression and all of the debt that they had already aquired. By not choosing a side, they were hoping to be able to improve their lives.

    American Involvement in WWII After an attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese, the U.S. could no longer stay in isolationism. They had to fight back and decided to join the Allied Leaders to stop the spread of facism and to get revenge for the lives lost from the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

    D-Day D-Day was a culmination of work to end WWII. In "operation overlord" the Allies tricked the German intelligence and instead, attacked the Normandy Peninsula on June 4th. From there, airborne divisions blocked enemy communication and the beaches of Gold, Sword, Juno, Utah and Omaha were all taken over by the Allies. This was the beginning of the German downfall.

    The Cold War The Cold War began after WWII ended. The U.S. was afraid of the U.S.S.R.'s nuclear power and the U.S. was also against communism and wanted to stop the spread of it. This war lasted for 45 years. The longest war in U.S. History. The U.S. defeated the U.S.S.R. but many lives were lost and the financial burden was ghastly.

    The Feminist Movement "The advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men." (google) Feminism was in full swing during the 1960s. Women wanted to be able to have a career, put off getting married until they were ready, and take control of their lives. Peaceful protests occurred to change the law to give women equal rights.
  • Death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

    Death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
    The King Center Martin Luther King Jr. was leader of the peaceful civil rights movement in the 60's. He paved the peaceful way for Black Americans to obtain the rights that they deserved. Mr. King was most known for his "I Have a Dream" speech. He was killed by James Earl Ray. This is a pivitol point in history because it the riots that occurred after it showed how much he did to stop the violence from occurring. He is an American icon.
  • Trickle-Down Theory

    Trickle-Down Theory
    Reaganomics "Proponents of this theory believe that when government helps companies, they will produce more and thereby hire more people and raise salaries. The people, in turn, will have more money to spend in the economy." (google). This theory was also called supply-side economics. It was presented in during President Reagan's term. The media at the time called this a part of "Reaganomics."

    Operation Desert Storm
    Operation Desert Storm was the first major international action after the Cold War. Iraqi dictator, Suddam Hussein, had infultrated Kuwait and was threatening to overtake Saudi Arabia, allotting Iraq one-fifth of the oil supply. U.S. President Bush could not let that happen. This operation occurred after Suddam refused to leave Kuwait. The U.S. proceeded to bomb Iraq as well as begin in ground warfare. The ground war gave the U.S. the upper hand and led to Iraq's agreement to ceasefire.

    Globalization "growth to a global or worldwide scale; "the globalization of the communication industry" (google). Globalization allowed people from all over the world to interact in a faster and more productive way. It also allowed cultures to be better studied and understood. Globalization changed the way we worked, studied, and lived. It also allowed other countries to become more powerful and productive.
