Chinese Exclusion Act
First law that restricted immigration. Americans believed the wages dropping and the economic ills were because of the Chinese workers. Congress passed this law to make the workers happy and lessen concerns about keeping white “racial purity”

Plessy v. Ferguson
Homer Plessy was only ⅛ Black (⅞ White) and was not allowed to sit in the “Whites only” car on the train. His lawyers said this went against the 13th and 14th Amendments. But, it was ruled that segregation was okay as long as it was equal.

Spanish American War
The U.S. started a war with Spain over the sinking of the Battleship Maine. This war was short lived and ended a few months later when the Treaty of Paris was signed. Spain lost many of their territories including Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Guam.

World War I
In 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was murdered. This caused a ton of anger and began a war between the Central and Allied Powers. Trench warfare became very popular along with many deadly weapons. For example, poison gas. In 1918 WWI finally came to an end, with the allies as winners.

Harlem Renaissance
The Harlem Renaissance was a time period where African American artists were able to express themselves through music and art. It allowed them to show off their culture. Also, it helped orchestrate the civil rights movement.

Stock Market Crash
Wall Street investors traded around 16 million shares in a single day. This caused billions to be lost and took out thousands of investors. This began what we know as the Great Depression.

The Great Depression
From 1929-1939 the US faced the worst economic struggle in history. In October of 1929 the stock market crashed and caused panic and chaos. Many businesses got shut down and it was very difficult for the US to recover.

Holocaust
From 1933-1945, six million Jewish men, women and children were murdered along with millions of other people as well. Nazis took over Germany and were controlled by Adolf Hitler. Those who were seen as unequal to Nazis were put into extermination camps where they could be forced to work, or deemed unfit and killed right after they arrive. Eventually, the Allies helped to free those who were stuck in camps.

The New Deal
The New Deal was a period of time after The Depression where President Roosevelt attempted to rebuild the economy. He created many jobs and programs to help people as well.

World War II
Germany invaded Poland in September of 1939 which sparked the beginning of WWII; and while the U.S. stayed out of it at first, the bombing of Pearl Harbor brought the U.S. into the war. WWII became the “bloodiest conflict” (Britannica) because of the amount of bombings and other war strategies. This war eventually ended in 1945 with Japan surrendering.

Cold War
At the end of WWII, there was lots of tension between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. They were both world powers and wanted to be the most powerful. Also, the spread of communism was beginning and the U.S. was trying to prevent it. Korean War
The Korean War began when North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950. Eventually, the U.S. (and United Nations) took the side of South Korea, as they believed it was a war against communism and South Korea was anti-communism. An armistice was created in July of 1953 which finally ended the war.

Brown V. Board of Education
This Supreme Court case ruled that segregation in schools was unconstitutional. It was a unanimous decision and proved that places that were “Separate-but-equal” were not equal.

The Vietnam War
The Vietnam war was a conflict between the communist government of North Vietnam and South Vietnam along with the United States as its ally. This conflict was escalated by the Cold War. In January of 1973 the US and North Vietnam came to a peace agreement ending war between the two nations, but war between North and South Vietnam continued. North Vietnam took over South Vietnam in 1975.

Iran-Contra Affair
The Iran-Contra Affair was a political scandal. The National Security Council began to give secret weapons to the enemy and sent financial aid as well. This was illegal as it was prohibited by Congress.

Reaganomics

Gulf War
The Gulf War was an international conflict that arose because of Iraq invading Kuwait. Iraq wanted to take over Kuwait's oil and to gain more power. The U.S. stopped trade with Iraq and the United Nations helped protect Kuwait. In the end, the coalition won.

September 11 attacks
On this day, 4 planes were hijacked and used as suicide missions. Two crashed into the twin towers, one hit the pentagon and another crashed into a field, as the passengers were able to overtake the terrorist. This caused lots of fear and anger and the U.S. went to Afghanistan to try and take down the Taliban.
