  • First National Labor Union

    First National Labor Union

    William Sylvis founded the first nationwide labor union. Together the skilled and unskilled workers politically protested for better wages and fewer working hours. While there were a variety of workers, none were of color, and in the end, conflict between farmers and skilled workers left an uncompromisable agenda. The NLU sizzled out by 1873.
  • Transcontinental Railway Completed

    Transcontinental Railway Completed

    The completetion of the railway acted as a catylist for the conflict between native american indians and the rising population of settlers. The settlers disrupted the traditions of the natives, especially with dispute of land, resulting in the Sand Creek massacre and Wounded Knee. The whites wanted the land for new farming, but to the natives the ancestral powers in their land were vital to their spirituality.

An anti-imperialist, Cleveland withdrew the annexation. The process was put on halt until Cleveland left office. McKinely, an active imperialist, reannexed Hawaii during the Spanish American war for us of naval base.

    The Wobblies are founded
    History of Wobblies The Wobblies were founded by William "big bill" Haywood. They were a group of radical socialists, a union made of industrial workers of the world. They did not believe in compromise with their employers, instead they fought directly at owners of companies. They attempted to oust the capitalist system of America through strikes across the country. The Wobblies were very against WW1, and launched unsuccesful antiwar movements
  • U.S entered WW1

    U.S entered WW1
    In 1917, just a year before the end of World War 1, the U.S., under Wilson, sent their troops to the trenches. They were triggered to declare war on Germany because of the sinking of the Lusitania and the Zimmerman telegraph. The war left hundreds of thousands mobilized and dead.     As people pushed to enter the job market white workers, even in the North, began blaming the flood of African American workers for low wages. The hatred lead to little hiring of blacks; therefore many were unemployed and left to live in the slums; Harlem, for example. However, the African Americans turned these slums into an opportunity of self expression through music, writing, tradition and spriit. America respected the blacks for their creativity for the first time in our history.

    Stock Market Crash
    In October of 1929 the New York stock exchange crashed. This lead the roaring 20s to a comlete financial hault. 25% of the population was unemployed, the most in our country's history. Many families were forced into poverty and left to rely on a very unreliable government financial aid.

    In the 1930s Foriegn Policy was not on Americas top priority list, in fact it was very unheard of.   • NEUTRALITY ACT

    NEUTRALITY ACT
    Leading into the year 1939 "Isolationists" (or those in favor of keeping our noses out of foreign policy) were hesitant to allow the trade of munitions between allies. The Neutrality Act ceased the "arms embargo" and allowed the flow of weapontry between the Allies.

    Pearl Harbor was the Japanese's bombing of America's navy in Hawaii. It angered the American population so much that the very next day President Roosevelt declared war.

    After the Alger Hiss espionage and the Cold War America was on edge about communism. Senator Joseph McCarthy lead the American public to believe they were in dire danger of cummunist domination. Many officials were improperly accused of being a communist and traitor working in the government. This was a time of fear for many Americans.

    Students for a Democratic Society
    The Port Huron Statement was a declaration sanctioned by the SDS and lead by a young student named Tom Hayden. It criticzed the mainstream American public and its ideas of anticommunism, materialism, social roles, sexism and racism. The group stood for horizontal democracy- something they believed we lacked following the Cold War. The group lead antiwar movements.

  • "The Feminine Mystique" was published

    "The Feminine Mystique" was published
    In 1963 Betty Friedan published "The Feminine Mystique", one of the first publications to point out the crisis of the American housewife. She brought up publicly for the first time what wives had been thinking for years.. "is this all?". She began to question the gender role of cooking dinner and bring your husband his slippers, helping spark the womens rights movements that followed.

    Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
    Martin Luther King Jr., one of the most predominant leaders of the non violent civil rights movement was assassinated in 1968. King came from a family of activists, and after attending BU, he partook in the bus boycott movement. His murder lead to many angry riots and outbursts over the loss of his leadership.

    End of The Vietnam War
    After 4 presidents, 60,000 American lives, and C.I.A opperatives, America's longest war in history came to an unsuccessful end. The public support faltered after years of false promises and tough ambush fighting. When Nixon signed a ceasfire in 1973 North Vietnam overtook South Vietnam into their communist control.

  • Iran Contra Affair

    Iran Contra Affair
    The Iran Contra Affair was an illegal covert ops trade. At the time there was a embargo that stated the U.S. could not sell arms. However, also at the time Iran was holding our embassy members hostage. Under the Reagan administration, there was a swap of hostages for arms. The money that came out of this was then used to support the Somoza dictatorship in Nicaragua.

    During his election of 1980 Reagan presented an economical plan to raise the country out of its recession and debt. His plan was to cut taxes for the rich, in hopes they would spend more money, which would then boost the economy and eventually "trickle down" to the poor.   • NAFTA signed

    NAFTA signed
    In 1994 Bill Clinton signed the Norht American Free Trade Agreement with Mexico and Canada. The hope was for growth in all the economies involved and to bring Mexico up to "first world" trading status. Unfortunately the lack of regulation in free trade zones has lead to corruption within free trade.
