    The Gilded Age (1870s-1900s) brought many advances in the industrialisation of the United States after the Civil War. During this time, the US government was riddled with corruption and weak leaders. The rapid economic growth in the Gilded Age was predominately among the wealthy, with huge inequality between the rich and the poor.

    Between the 1880s and the 1920s, America saw its peak of immigration. Companies saw immigrants as a cheap labor force while Americans viewed them as competition. The increased number of immigrants also brought along a plethora of new cultures. These cultures were integrated into American culture, making America a melting pot for different cultures

    With the completion of the trans-continental railroad, it was much easier for Americans to travel from the East to the West and claim Indian land. There were many conflicts between these two groups and both sides had committed many terrible acts. There were many factors supporting the US Army, such as its technology. Another factor was illnesses that white people were adapted to but Indians weren't.

    In the early 20th century, many different groups had a reason to support American expansion overseas. Industrialists could get access to new markets and resources. America was able to expand and gain much of its territory through war and negotiation. The Spanish American War in 1898 won the US control over Guam, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. With America's global influence, it rose to become one of the superpowers of the world.

    In 1918, America joined the European conflict between the Allies and he Central Powers. America was dragged into this conflict because their trade more than tripled with England and France while it shrunk by 90% with Germany. America had a large contribution in the war through delivering soldiers and supplies to the battle. Due to being dragged into this conflict, America was forced to give up its isolationism.

    After the First World War, the League of Nations was founded as a result of the Paris Peace Conference. The League of Nations was a intergovernmental organisation whose main purpose was to maintain world peace. It was created in hopes of solving international disputes through conflicts and prevent wars like the World War from happening again. It also sought to solve other issues such as trafficking, global health arms trade etc.

    The Harlem Renaissance marked the development of African American culture during the 1920s. Racial segregation and discrimination were still prevalent in America during this time. The Harlem Renaissance brought a lot of culture pride to many African Americans around the country. A major aspect of the Harlem Renaissance was jazz. The Harlem Renaissance not only affected African Americans, it caught the attention of Whites across the country.

    On 1929, the American stock market crashed leading to the Great Depression after a phenomenal growth of the American economy in the 1920s. Millions of Americans lost their jobs doing the Great Depression and the president at that time, Hoover, did not do much to alleviate the problems. It was not until 1932, when Roosevelt came into office did things get better. Roosevelt implemented the New Deal and gave Americans new jobs and insurance.

    World War II was a global war between the Allies and the Axis Powers. Britain and France declared war on Germany after they directly violated the Treaty of Versailles on September 3rd, 1939, beginning World War II. The US joined the war after Pearl Harbour, and fought in the Pacific against Japan. The European World War ended on May 8th, 1945 with German surrender while the Pacific World War ended on August 4th, 1945 with Japanese surrender.

    Before this incident, America was trying to avoid directly joining World War II to preserve its isolationism. On December 7th, 1941, a fleet of Japanese planes bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. This attack killed over 3000 American soldiers and rendered 6 ships useless. The Japanese did this in hopes of crippling America's navy in case they tried to stop their expansion. However, this instead brought America into World War II.

    After the end of World War II, the Big Three sought to replace the weak League of Nations. In its place, the United Nations was founded in 1945. Similar to the League of Nations, the United Nations' goal was to solve international disputes through negotiation and to maintain world peace. However, the system of the United Nations consisted of the Security Council and the General Assembly.

    The Cold War was a series of conflicts between the US and the Soviet Union which close to 50 years. Tensions were high during this time with threats of a nuclear war. The US attempted to prevent the spread of communism and participated in the affairs of other countries in events such as the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The world was split in two, with most of the power between the US and the Soviets and other countries allying with them.

    The Korean War was the first major conflict that the US took part in after the Cold War had begun. Northern Korea was supported by the Soviet Union and had a Communist government and threatened to turn all of Korea into a Communist country. America decided to intervene and pushed North Korea back over the 38th parallel. US troops continued pushing them back and had to stop when the Chinese, who supported the North, threatened to join the War.

    The Vietnam war began as Northern Vietnam threatened to turn Vietnam into a Communist state. American intervened in hopes of preventing this, starting the longest war in US history. In the end, the US lost public support and they were not able to accomplish any of their goals in Vietnam. The Vietnam war lasted 20 years starting in 1955 and ending in 1975 with over 60,000 US troops lost.
  • Civil Rights Movements

    In the 1960s and the 1970s, many different groups fought for human rights. Racial segregation was prominent during this time and the social norms during this time prevented many people from having good lives. There were many movements and demonstrations, many of them peaceful while there were also some violent ones. However, opposition against these movements were strong and it took many years for change.

    Similar to the Civil Rights Movement, this movement was aimed at changing the social norms in America, except this time of women. Women were expected to not gain jobs and stay home as housewives, and those who were employed earned less than their male counterparts. The Feminist Movement aimed for equal rights between women and men and to empower women across the country.

    Ronal Reagan was put into office in 1980 and some major events during his time in office was Reaganomics and INF Treaty. In the early 1980s, Reagan hoped to improve the economy by reducing taxes by 25%. However, as a result of this the countries poverty and debt increased. When Mikhail Gorbachev assumed control over the USSR, US and Soviet relations were less strained and the INF Treaty removed an entire class of nuclear weapons.

    Technological advances in the 1990s have allowed for many new possibilities in America. One of the major benefits of this advance in technology is the ability to communicate across the world and spread ideas, allowing for American globalisation. A driving force for this technological advance was the Internet. It was extremely convenient for many people to be able to use the Internet and commercial possibilities were limitless.

    Mikhail Gorbachev's actions brought an end to the Soviet Union and with it the Cold War. His decision to introduce the policies of openness to Western culture prompted ideas of freedom to spread across Soviet territory. Eastern European communist dictatorships fell one by one and in its place were new governments. Eventually, the Soviet Union dissolved as Russia, Ukraine and Byelorussia declared independence.

    With the rise of the Internet and easier access to technologies such as computer and phones, the world has become more connected than it has ever been. With this connection, American ideas are able to spread around the world at an extremely fast pace. We can see many American companies setting up stores in other countries and their influence is seen everywhere. Other countries also used America's economic model in order to also be prosperous.
