US History Timeline 1900-1920

  • Theodore Roosevelt becomes President

    On September 14, 1901 Theodore Roosevelt became the 26th President of the United States. His presidency lasted until March 4, 1909.
  • 16th Amendment

    On February 3, 1913 the 16th amendment was offically ratified. The 16th amendment stated that Congress has a right to place a federal income tax. This was to simplify the tax code and expand the tax base.
  • World War I

    On July 28, 1914 World War I has officially begun. The war is starts off with Austria declaring war on Serbia, and then later Austria and Germany. The war began as a result of the assassination of the Arch Duke.
  • Construction of Panama Canal

    On August 15, 1914 the construction of the Panama Canal was finished. The estimated final cost was $350 million dollars which put it at the most expensive project done in the United States.
  • Sussex Pledge issued by Germany

    On May 4, 1916 Germany issued a Sussex Pledge which agrees to give the appropriate warning before sinking a merchant ship, as well as providing the right amount of safety to those on board.
  • U.S. enters in WWI

    On April 4, 1917 the United States has officially entered into World War I. They were prompted to join due to the bombing of Pearl Harbor led by the Japanese on US territory.
  • The Treaty of Versailles

    On June 28, 1919 the Treaty of Versailles was issued. This treaty was known as one of the biggest controversies in history. It stated that Germany and the other Central Powers needed to take all blame for World War I. This resulted in loss of territory and a reduction their military forces.
  • 19th Amendment

    On August 18, 1920 the 19th Amendment was finalized. This amendment gave women the right to vote in America. This was huge for the U.S. and became a major turning point for women's lives.
