    To encourage westward migration, any American over 21 could receive 160 acres of land in exchange to improve the land.

    Civil War End, Reconstruction Begins
    With the ratification of the 13th amendment, the Civil War ends and Radical Republicans want to set their agenda to punish Confederate states.
  • Liberal Republican Party Created

    Created by Civil Service reformers who opposed the Spoils System and patronage. Pushed for patronage reform in political machines and positions of political power.
  • Great Railroad Strike of 1877

    Great Railroad Strike of 1877
    Workers went on strike and blocked tracks due to wages being cut. PA government ordered militia and eventually federal troops to protect railroads. Resulted in riots, violence, and looting.

    Hayes wins close presidential election. South democrats would be apart of his cabinet. Democrats could give federal jobs in the south. Committee created to help national improvements and federal troops withdrawn from the south.

    Government authority over monopolies. Federal government authorized to institute proceedings against trusts to dissolve them.

    United States switches from Edison's DC electricity to Westinghouse's AC electricity to allow electricity to be delivered to longer distances. Lead to urbanization and cities to operate 24/7/

    Spanish-American War
    American interests in Central/South America and the explosion of the USS Maine allowed Americans to intervene in the region to protect public interests and expanding global empire.
  • Zimmerman Telegram

    Zimmerman Telegram
    Britain intercepted a German coded message for Mexico. They invited Mexico to join war if U.S. declares war on Germany. Telegram also encouraged Mexico to invade the U.S. to gain back their stolen land. This leads to America declaring war on Germany.

    19th Amendment Ratified
    President Wilson ratifies women's suffrage after viewing their hunger strikes and protests, contributions to the view, and his daughter being a suffragist.

    The 18th amendment outlawed the sale, production, and consumption of alcohol. Mainly passed because of the war to increase to gain sympathy for anti-German sentiment, the public began opposing the law and resulted in increased organized crime.

    With 16 million stocks dumped, over $14 billion in wealth was lost and banks demanded loans to be paid off. The severe stock market crash was the foundation of The Great Depression.

    FDR's solution to solve the Great Depression. His first deal revolved around banking reforms, employment relief, rescuing farms and factories, and regional planning. His second new deal involved The Banking Act, Social Security, union rights, Supreme Court packing, and Fair Labor Standards.

    As a result of a U.S. embargo on Japan, the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii resulted in many casualties. America officially declares war on Japan while Germany and Italy declare war on the U.S. America joins the war.

    George Kennan sends a telegram from Moscow to D.C. that showed the Soviets believed destroying America and their influence to protect their political ideology.

    U.S. intervenes after Soviets attempt to spread Communism in Vietnam. The war was too much to bear for America as the costs and causalities of the growing war was too much.

    Apollo 11 lands on the Moon
    With America landing a man on the moon, America beat the Soviets in technology showing that they were superior in spaceflight.
  • Watergate Scandal

    After members of Nixon's campaign broke into the Democratic National Headquarters, Nixon attempts to cover up the scandal resulting in him being impeached.
