    Henry Clay made the Compromise of 1850. It provided California as a free state to add to the union. For the south, the Compromise created a more effective fugitive slave law. And for the north and the south, it provided popular sovereignty.

    In the presidential election in 1860, Republicans nominated Abraham Lincoln. The south had a problem with Lincoln because he wanted the spreading of slavery to end. After Lincoln won, South Carolina started the succession of the south.
