    This timeline will display all events that were significant in American History. This will cover the span of the years 1877 to 2011.
  • Great Railroad Strike of 1877 Start

    Great Railroad Strike of 1877 Start
    Railroad Strike The railroad workers in Martinsburg, West Virginia disagreed with the 10% paycut they were recieving along with many other harsh work conditions and went on strike for it. This was the beginning of the Great Railroad Strike that spanned many states. The workers said that no train would leave as long as the paycut was still in place. The crowd amassed great support. Eventually, the demands were met.

    Chinese Exclusion Act Summary Americans on the west coast attributed unemployment and declining wages to the number of Chinese immigrants working in the US in the area at the time. The Chinese Exclusion Act was passed to restrict Chinese immigrants from entering the United States. The act was repealed in 1943, and Chinese immigrants were once again legally allowed to enter the United States.

    Spanish-American War The Spanish-American War came of essence when the United States helped Cuba win its independence from Spain. The main battle of this war was that of Manila Bay, where the US had a great victory that prompted the end of the war. The US gained the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam from Spain at the end of the war.

    Imperialism American imperialism represents America's desire to influence other countries. This was primarily seen in the early 20th century when America was expanding beyond our own country after westward expansion was completed. This date also marks the end of the Spanish-American War.

    Sinking of Lusitania Information The RMS Lusitania was sunk by a German U-Boat during World War I but before the US had officially joined the war. This act by the Germans enraged the public and contributed towards America's decision to join the war.

    US Joining WW1 After the sinking of the Lusitania and the Zimmerman Telegram, the United States joined Britain, France, Russia, and others against the Central Powers. The US was instrumental in the end of the war with the added numbers of soldiers that were provided.

    Harlem Renaissance Information The Harlem Renaissance was a significant movement in the 1920s. This time period is considered the rebirth of African American culture and pride.

    Great Depression Information After the stock market crashed and succeeding events that caused turmoil in American's economy, the Great Depression rocked the nation. This is the worst economic situation in American history.
  • Social Security Act of 1935

    Social Security Act of 1935
    Social Security Information This act established a system of Federal retirement benefits and allowed the states to provide for the blind, aged, dependent and handicapped children, and mother and child welfare. Also, unemployed persons, were assisted due to this act. Current works would pay into social security. It is still in effect today.

    Isolationism in America Isolationism is the practice of a country to separate itself from the affairs of other countries around it. America's past experiences in getting involved in the proceedings of other countries prompted this idea in the country in the 1930s.

    Pearl Harbor Information The attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese was the start of American involvement in World War II. Almost 3,000 Americans were killed, and numerous ships in port were destroyed.

    Korean War Information The Korean War began as a civil war between North Korea and South Korea. The United States became involved when they assisted South Korea. The Korean War lasted three years, and over 53,000 Americans lost their lives during this war.

    Vietnam War Information The Vietnam was the longest war in United States history. It was started due to promises to South Vietnam to hold off the communist forces that were attempting to take the region.

    Civil Rights Movement Information The Civil Rights Movement was a large movement by African American citizens of the United States to be recognized as equal citizens and treated as such. The movement had many key events that led to the implementation of African Americans as equals into society eventually.

    Feminism Information Much like the Civil Rights Movement, women demanded equal treatment in society. There were many debates on topics such as abortion and equal pay in the workplace. These issues still continue to be debated to this day.

    Non-Violence during Vietnam War Information Non-violence, or the Peace Movement, was characterized by many Americans protesting the multiple wars the United States had become involved in. This was a large part of the Vietname-era due to the lack of popularity of the war amongst the public.

    End of The Cold War Information During this time period, the Berlin Wall was torn down, the Iron Curtain fell. Mikhail Gorbachev, a reformer, came into power during this time in the USSR. Finally, in December of 1991 the Soviet Union was dissolved, signifying the end of The Cold War between the U.S. and The Soviet Union.

    World Wide Web Information Tim Berners-Lee invented a way of using networks of computers to communicate with each other. There are now more than 600 million websites worldwide. The web has changed things forever for the world who can now access information and share things in a way not possible before.

    Operation Desert Storm Information The Persian Gulf War began with an enoromus U.S.-led air offensive known as Operation Desert Storm. This was the first post-Cold War foreign crisis for the U.S.. Saddam Hussein, the dictator of Iraq, ordered his army across the border into tiny Kuwait. The U. S. responded by defending Saudi Arabia and Kuwait by deploying 500,000 American troops.
  • The North American Free Trade Agreement

    The North American Free Trade Agreement
    NAFTA Information NAFTA created the world's largest free trade area.The agreement was between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. NAFTA has had both positive and negative effects since it came into effect.
