Confederate forces surrounded and shot at Fort Sumter. The next day the Union commander, Major Robert Anderson, surrendered and evacuated the next day.

A Union vessel, Monitor, collided with a similar Confederate vessel, Merrimack. The Merrimack, now named Viriginia, hit the pilot house and injured the captain. The Monitor wrecked into shallow water and the Virginia ran out of ammo.

Confederate soldiers came out of the woods and ambushed Union soldiers near the Pittsburg Landing. The Union was surrounded but held thier ground for two days. It was the bloodiest battle in American history at the time.

General Robert E. Lee led an ambush on the Union around a small town called Gettysburg. He forced the Union back gaining all their land. During the next two days the Union fought long and hard and gained all their land back and killing several Confederates on the way.
