In this event demonstrates Sanji who is Japanese himself first time talking to an American which japs called them haole. This is important shows a view how Japanese had some sort of isolation with Americans not talking as often to each other or knowing one another

In this event Tomi the main character was told many times to not shame the family by his father which he always hears in his dreams. This demonstrates how strong certain Japanese family does not want their family to be a shame at all and take great responsibility.
Pg. 28 " You shame yourself. If you shame yourself, you shame all of us. Be above it, Tomi. . . that's the only way". -
Tomi's grampa put a Jap flag to demonstrates who they are as people but Mr. Wilson who owns the house where Tomi lives does not like the flag being prejudice because of rumors of Japanese attacks. Grampa does not care what Mr.Wilson says and Tomi because he is proud to be a Japanese.
Pg. 80 " We are Japanese, confinnit. . . . Japanese!". -
In the novel, there are rumors of Japan and the US go to war many people are pointing finger as Tomi's father is worried as time passes what would happen as he states
Pg. 87 " They wondering whose side us Hawaii Japanese going take, and what we going do if Japan and U.S. got into a figth". -
Tomi and his family hear planes hover around Pearl Harbor after seconds they hear explosions that burst out to their ears. And this stumbles upon Pearl Harbor being attack from Japan planes.
Pg. 107 " The noise stabbed into my ears. The fighter banked abruptly, then sped back toward the swarm of planes circling Pearl Harbor". -
In this event Tomi's family decide to bury all things related to Japan including the Japanese flag which could bring attraction towards US soldiers/military that they might suspect they have been helping.
Pg. 109 " Mama stared at them. It suddenly all made sense to her. Bury it. she said, her eyes wide with fear.Bury that flag." -
In this event, soldiers appear on Tomi's home because someone had reported that they had messenger birds and were giving info to Japanese soldiers in which truly they were not. But no matter what the US soldiers considered everything now as a threat. In which Tomi and his grampa were forced to kill the messenger birds

In this event, Tomi's father was taken from US but wounded and also Sanji a friend who was killed because both Sanji and the father went towards Pearl Harbor but needed the US flag to show they were not enemies. But unfortunately all went wrong.

In this event, Tomi seeks to find his father which he is really worried because not seen him in many days so he decides to go Sand island to go on a look out for his father.

In this event, while Tomi is on the look out to find his father, he finds out that his Grampa was taken away from US soldiers. This was because previously the family bury all Japanese things. But eventually the soldiers found out. Now Tomi's family are being prejudice and other japs like them along the time of period of Pearl Harbor attack.
