Masters in virginia had used the land until it bled and died.They had no crops for sale these days so they were beggining to raise and sell slaves. Julilly could be one of them!!! -
Slaves needed down the deep south.
There was fertile land in the deep, deep south.The masters there needed slaves to work for there fields. slave traders from south were coming to buy tommorow!!! -
Julilly worried but hoping for the good
Julilly was shivering, her feet were cold and she her heart was sinking as she thought about mammy sally and she being seperated from each other! -
Canada: a land where slavery is not allowed.
Mammy sally encouraged julilly by telling her that "Pray to the good lord, remember to be proud that you had a strong fine daddy and a mammy that loves you.Then she told julilly about canada."A land dont allow no slavery there. They say you travel north and follow the northstar, and when you step onto that land youre FREE! -
Slave traders arrive
The slave trader arrives to Masa Henson's plantation to buy slaves. Julilly is seperated from Mammy Sally. -
"Shes strong and healthy"- Sims
Julilly was the only one, strong enough to take care of the little children who were pulled away from their mothers and fathers. -
Free Black boy
Julilly and the other children see a white man chopping trees and a young black boy working with him stacking the logs into a pile.Julilly finds out that the black boy was not a slave of the white man and he was free. This led her to wondering, if this had anything to do with Canada. -
Thirst
Julilly and the children were thirsty.
"Julilly get us water'
'Please, Julilly get us water', the children pleaded.
The white man ordered the free black boy to give water to jullily and the children. -
Motivation
sometimes jullily thought of jumping from the wagon and running into the woods. But if she did who would care for the babies in the wagon? who would pour water over the torn ankles of lester, adam and ben?.She was the only one strong and free enough to help. Her songs encouraged the other ones in the cart. -
Julilly drew strengh from lester.
Jullily didnt know why, but somehow she drew strength from lester's high-held head and angry eyes. She felt safe when he was around her. He helped her to remember the free black boy and the tall, gentle man who paid him for work. Most of all, he helped her remember 'CANADA'. -
Julilly saves Adam and Ben.
One day the wagon in which they were travelling in got stuck in a swamp and the swamp pulled Ben and Adam into the water. Julilly got Lester's pride when she showed courage by getting Adam and Ben out of the swamp. -
Slaves arrive at the Riley plantation
The slaves arrived at the Riley plantation. Julilly is impressed by the Big House which is very different to the one of Massa Henson's.
But Julilly with a shock realised that sims was the overseer, meaning he was the boss of all the slaves. -
Tattered huts
The slaves quarters at Rileys plantation were low and ugly. The doors sagged on broken hinges and the walls of logs spread wide where the mud chinking had fallen out. -
Julilly seperated from Ben, Adam and Lester
Julilly went to another field, away from Ben, Adam and Lester, and over there she meets Liza, the hunch-backed girl. -
The plantation was a no-good, rotten place to live.
Julilly saw that, the meal for the children was a corn meal mush. She stared in disbelief at how the children sucked and dipped in thier meal.She began looking for willie and the other children who had travelled with her in the wagon but they werent there. They hadnt yet learned how to suck their food from a trough. -
First-Working day
The harvesting of cotton began from before sun rise. The two girls worked the whole day. She protected Liza from Sims by overshadowing her. -
Liza knew about Canada
Julilly Told liza about Canada but To her surprise Liza Had Heard about Canada, too. -
Mr.Alexander Ross
r. Alexander Ross arrives at the Riley Plantation and tells that he is an ornithologist from Canada and tells sims that he came south to study different birds. He askes sims for few slaves for guidance. -
Julilly thought Mr.Alexander Ross Could Help her.
Mr. Ross holds Sims hands while he is about to whip Julilly and she is happy that Mr. Ross has saved her from Sims. -
Lester and Adam are Chosen.
Mr.Alexander Ross selects 2 slaves, they were Adam and Lester. Later Julilly becomes curious when she see's Mr. Ross going with Lester and Adam to the Piney Woods and disappear. -
Exitement....
There was exitement between the slaves because of Mr.Ross.
The girls whispered about Canada and Mr.Ross, they shared what they heard.
Julilly and Liza too kept thinking about Canada. -
Afraid But Determined........
Julilly and Liza were determined to go to Canada.They made a plan to follow the North Star together. -
"He's here to help slave escape to Canada"
Lester told Julilly that Mr.Ross wasnt there to catch birds. He came to help slaves escape to Canada. He told her to Keep this as a secret between her and liza only.Lester told Julilly to come for a meeting in middle of the pine woods- Late at night. -
Mr.Ross Tells how to Escape.......
Julilly and Liza went into the Piney Woods and found Lester, Adam, Ben and Massa Ross there. He explained how to escape. Liza and Julilly were Very exited, they couldnt Sleep. -
Ready To Escape
Julilly and Liza saw Massa Ross at the night of departure as he explained the whole route to take and gave Julilly and Liza boys' clothes. -
The Journey Begins...
The four slaves began thier journey to Canada along the Mississippi River and soon they heard the sound of bloodhounds following them. -
"Friends with a friend"
When the slaves reach Tennessee, they find a man in a wagon who tells them that Mr. Ross has been put to jail. He hides them under the canvas of his wagon and carries them secretly. -
A narrow escape
People from the Riley Plantation stop the wagon and ask the driver whether he has seen any slaves. They pull back the canvas to see , but luckily they only see hay and they leave. -
Finaly, a good shelter.....
The four slaves and the Quacker Aboltionist stayed at a barn. Later, he gave them a compass, told them to go North-East and left them. -

The quacker explained the directions for canada. He told them about the underground railway, a place where they could stay and rest. -
Lester and Adam, caught.
The slave traders found Lester and Adam and put them in chains right in front of Julilly and Liza, as they ran away towards the East.
