    The doors opened for foreigners. New ideas came into Japan. The country of Japan industialized quickly. There was a high demand for resources, unrtunately Japan had poor resources.

    Attempt to overthrow the Koreans goverment.

    A group of Japanese reformers attempted to attempted to overthrow the Korean government. They were stopped by Chinese troops.

    The first Sino-Japanese War

    As tensions increased between Japan and Chinese government as the Chinese assasinated the pro-Japanese, Korean leader. Japan won the war. China handed over Korea & Taiwan to Japan. They also payed a large indemnity to them.

    Japan declares war Russia
    Russia was interested in getting Korea and Manchuria as the China was on the decline. There was a failed attempt for a diplomatic agreement with Russia. Japan suprised Russia and declared war on Russia.

    In a war with many bloody battles, Japan was victorious over Russia. Japan became the first asian country to claim a big victory over a European nation. This established them as a major world power.

    The war allowed Japan to gain most of Germany's asian & pacific collonies because of the alliance Japan had with Britain. Japan also demanded a list of things from China. Once Japan threatened invasion, China listened to Japan's demands. Japan gained many resources from China and became a Asian industrial giant.

    Invasion of China
    (Not sure when it started.) Prior to this, Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931. Along with the China invasion, they were very brutal. In the China invasion, even though they emperor was in power, the real power was in the hands in the military. Fortunately, after the invasion, Japan issued Amau Doctrine which meant "Japan assumed responsibility for Peace in asia."

    Plan for Great East Asia

    A plan was announced for the Great East Asia Co-Porsperity Sphere. It was to justify imperialist expansion throughout Asia. The ultranationalist intent was to align asian countries. Slogans such as "Asia for Asians" became popular.

    Defeat of World War 2
    The defeat in WWII resulted in complete removal of military influence in Japan. Now Japan's nationalism focused on idustrial growth. The country rose and became a huge economic force in the world.
