    Jackie Robinson becomes the first African American in the major leagues, he ended the unwritten segregation rule in MLB. He overcame the hate of people by continuing to do good on the field. Robinson becomes the highest payed player on the dodgers as well.
  • Little Rock Crisis

    Governor Orval Faubus ordered Arkansas National Guard to prevent African American students from enrolling at Central High School, which was an all white school. Eisenhower sends in U.S Army and puts Arkansas National Guard under federal control, to ensure enrollment and safety for African American students.

    The Greenboro Sit-Ins of 1960 provoked all manner of emotions when they occurred . It began on February 1st, 1960 in the city of Greensboro when 4 African American students from North Carolina A+T College ordered food in an establishment that refused to serve blacks. The sit in motivated other students to take part in sit ins in the city.

  • George Wallace & the University of Alabama

    George Wallace & the University of Alabama
    Following his election as Governor of Alabama, George Wallace promised to keep Alabama segregated. On June,11, 1963 George Wallace blocked the door at the University of Alabama to prevent blacks from enrolling to the University.On June 10, 1963, President John F. Kennedy federalized National Guard troops and deployed them to the University of Alabama to force its desegregation.
  • Medgar Evers murdered

    Medgar Evers murdered
    Medgar Evers was a civil rights activist and a field secretary for the NAACP in Mississippi. While walking up to his house he was shot fatally and the murder was witnessed by his childreen. The killer Byron De La Beckwith was put to trial but both all white jurys set him free. Later in 1990 the trial was reopened and Byron De La Beckwith was found guilty and senteced to life.
  • 16th street bombing (Birmingham, Al)

    16th street bombing (Birmingham, Al)
    Baptist Church bombing that killed 4 black girls during church services. Caused widespread awareness and MLK spoke at the church the following day.
  • Murder in Mississippi

    Three civil rights workers were murdered by KKK members. The murdered men had been working on the "Freedom Summer" campaign to register blacks to vote. Their deaths sparked widespread anger and massive federal investigation.

    Were formed in California in 1966 and played an important role in the Civil rights movement. Black panthers believed in achieving their goals with violence to gain equality for blacks instead of a peaceful manner like MLK. The Black Panther party was dissolved in 1982
  • MLK assasinated

    MLK was shot by a snipers bullet in Memphis, Tennessee, and was pronounced dead an hour after he was shot. Many blacks were angered by the assasination that there was widerspead riots across the United States.
