    One of Iyasu's first initiatives was to designate the Tokaido as the official highway from his new capital in Edo to the old capital in Kyoto. To do so, the shogun put 53 stations between the two destinations, which would require post stations and improvements to the road. High security.

    In the mid 1800s travel restrictions on the Road were lifted which gave rise to private businesses. Rikuun Moto Gaisha (Land Transport Co.) was a company established in Tokyo to handle baggage and networked road travel.
