    Completion of Transcontinental Railroad
    By 1860 there were over 30,000 miles of railroad across the country. The railroads went all the way from east to west side of the country. Workers worked on the railroad up to 15 hours a day.
  • John D. Rockefeller starts Standard Oil

  • Alexander Graham Bell invents the telephone

    Alexander Graham Bell invents the telephone
    The first call on the telephone was Alexander Graham Bell to his assistant, Thomas Watson. Bell established the Bell telephone company in 1877. Within 10 years of the invintion over 100,000 americans had a telephone.
  • Thomas Edison brings light to the world with the light bulb

    Thomas Edison brings light to the world with the light bulb
    Eddison had his own electric company called, "Eddison Electric Company". In October 1879 he made a big breakthrough with a bulb that uses a platinum filament. Although he invinted the light bulb there were a lot of problems that came with it.

    Henry Ford produced his first Model T (car)
    There were over 15 million model Ts. The price was lowered from $850 to $300. The top speed of the car was 40-45 mph.

    Ellis Island opens
    It served as in immigration station for more than 60 years. It closed in 1954. Approximately 40% of U.S. citizens have an ancestor that went through Ellis Island.

    Creation of the NAACP
    NCAAP is the oldest civil rights organization. It was formed in New York City by black and white activist. There are over half a million people involved world wide.

    145 people were killed in the fire. Brought attention to the safety in factories. Many new laws and regulations were made because of the fire.

    The Assassination of Austria’s archduke Franz Ferdinand starts WWI
    Because Franz Ferdinand was in line to Austria-Hungary throne, was the main reason WW1 was started. His wife was also murdered with him. A 19-year-old kid named Princip killed them both.
  • The Panama Canal is completed and opened for traffic

    The United States enters WWI
    The United States entered WWI because German U-boats sank six American merchant ships without warning. During the war 234,000 Americans died. The war ended on November 11 1918.
  • Ratification of the 18th Amendment - Prohibition

  • Women got the right to vote.

    Women got the right to vote.
    Not all women were given the right to vote immediately. You had to be over 30 years or a homeowner. This excluded a lot of the working class women.
  • The Philippine Insurrection comes to an end
