    January 10th, 1901, was a monumental date for the world: oil was hit at Spindletop hill, marking the beginning of the industrial world as we know it today. This wasn’t the first time oil had been struck in Texas, though. Lyne T. Barret drilled Texas’ first successful oil well at Melrose in Nacogdoches County way back in 1866.     A hurricane caused severe destruction to the coastal city of Galveston, Texas, and roughly 6000 died. It reigns as the USA's deadliest natural disaster to date.

    On September 8th, 1900, a hurricane demolished Galveston. The thriving coastal city was unprepared, and they paid the price: an estimated 6000 died, making up 1/6th of Galveston’s population at that time. Because of this, the city commission type of government was first created in 1901. 17 years later (1918 for those of you who aren’t good at math), the 18th Amendment was passed, banning the sale, transportation, and manufacture of alcohol. The 19th Amendment was passed not too long afterwards

    On June 28th, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated at a parade in Bosnia, Serbia. The war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia was officially started on July 28th, 1914. It would have been a relatively small conflict if both sides didn’t have their alliances. But they did, and so more and more countries got into the fight.     Austria-Hungary and Serbia officially declared war on July 28th, 1914.

    The British passenger ship, the Lusitania, was sunk. 128 Americans lost their lives.

    The Zimmerman Telegram was sent in January of 1917 from Germany to Mexico.

    The Germans had been invading Poland to take back land they had lost in WWI, and France and Great Britain apparently didn’t like that. On September 3rd, 1939, France and Great Britain declared war on Germany. The US stays out of it (though we side with Great Britain) once more until December 7th, 1941, when Japan launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, a shipyard in Hawaii.     The US chooses to stay out of it again until December 7th, 1941, when Japanese pilots attack Pearl Harbor, a Hawaiin Naval base.

    The US drops another nuclear bomb on Nagasaki, Japan, three days later.
