  • Mercantilism

    This was a political system to make the country more money by restraining imports and encouraging exports.
  • Jamestown

    First English colony in American
  • House of Burgesses

    First legislative body in the New World which started in Jamestown
  • Mayflower Compact

    Social Contract of the pilgrims that created the first direct democracy in the colonies.
  • Bacon's Rebellion

    The rebellion happened in Virginia and it was because of governor William Berkeley refusal to retaliate against the Native American attacks on frontier settlements.
  • Glorious Revolution

    Also called the Revolution of 1688. The objective was to overthrow King James II of England.
  • Intolerable Acts/Coercive Acts

    These acts were passed to punish the colonies for the Boston tea party act. They closed the Boston harbor until the colonists to paid for the wasted tea. Then soldiers weren't punished for crimes they committed.
  • 1st Continental Congress

    Meeting of colonial delegates in 1774 to oppose the Intolerable Acts.
  • 2nd Continental Congress

    Gathering of colonial delegates that resulted in the writing of the Declaration of Independence.
  • Battle of Lexington and Concord

    First revolutionary battle. The British troops are supposed to take the militia weapons but they run into an untrained and angry militia.
  • Mecklenburg Resolves

    This was a list of statements adopted by Charlotte. North Carolina did not declare there independence from Great Britain even though it was still a defiance. It was just reconciliation if parliament was to resign there laws with respect back to America.
  • Quartering Act

    You had to provide resources and a home for soldiers. This made the colonist very angry.
  • Stamp Act

    Tax on newspapers and legal documents
  • Declaratory Act

    They repealed the stamp act and lowered the sugar act in return to pass this act. This also gave parliament the power to pass laws that was binding to the colonies.
  • Townshend Acts

    Acts passed by the British Parliament to increase taxes on glass, leads, paints, papers and tea imported into the colonies.
  • Boston Massacre

    British troops fired into a crowd killing five people. This lead to intense protests.
  • Tea Act

    This was an act from the Parliament of Great Britain that granted the British East Indian Company free import of its tea into the colonies. It also allowed a monopoly of tea sales of tea in the colonies.
  • Boston Tea Party

    This was a political protest by the sons of liberty. They dumped tons of tea into the Boston harbor that was from the British.
  • Shots Heard Around the World

    First shots at Lexington and Concord to start the American Revolutionary war.
  • Thomas Paine's Common Sense

    Influential 1775 pamphlet that called for independence from Great Britain
  • Halifax Resolves

    This was the first official action from the colonies showing there independence from Great Britain. This helped the presentation to congress for the Declaration of Independence.
  • Declaration of Indepence

    This was the document from the colonists explaining why they were separating from Great Britain
  • NC First Governor

    The first NC governor was Richard Caswell which had no political part. He left office in April 20th, 1780.
  • Articles of Confederation

    The Articles of the Confederation was the first Constitution in the U.S. Later on replaced by the U.S. Constitution because it was so weak. It gave all the power to the states and none to the Federal Government.
  • Treaty of Paris

    This officially ends the American revolutionary way.
  • Shays Rebellion

    Early rebellion by farmers that displayed the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation. They take up arms to protest high state taxes and get rid of the penalties for failure to pay them.
  • Northwest Ordinance

    This allowed people to settle in the west adding to the total state count.
  • Common Law

    This is laws that was established in earlier judicial cases. It is represented in the constitution and the bill of rights. Common law only refers to civil law cases.
