Edgar Hoover became the acting director of the Bureau of Investigation on May 10 on 1924 and then was formally named director by the end of the year, he then served this role for 48 years up until his death in 1972. He then lead to the agency to change its name to the Federal Bureau of investigation also known as the FBI in 1935 -
Mein Kampf in German means my struggle and it’s an autobiographical manifesto by Adolf Hitler. He ended up publishing two volumes of it one was published in 1925 and the other was published in 1926. It is also the foundational text of Nazism which Hitler outlined his racist ideology, political philosophy, and the future plans of Germany. -
The stock market crash happened in 1929 on October 24th and it ended on October 29th if that same year. These days were nicknamed black Tuesday and Black Thursday. With this studded decline in the U.S. stock prices it had triggered the Great Depression. This crash was caused by overvalued stocks, widespread debt, and an over abundance of speculation. It ended up wiping out billions of dollars and thousands of investors.

The Dust Bowl was a period of time where severe dust storms hit the Great Plains region of the United States during the 1930s. It was caused by a major drought and poor farming practices. This catastrophe is often called the worst man made ecological disaster in American history. It devastated the farming community in some states. The storms, dust, and crop failures had forced hundreds of people to migrate from their homes. -
Franklin D. Roosevelt was first elected President in November of 1932. He was elected during the Great Depression. He ended up promising a new deal during his campaign and he ended up taking office on March 4th 1933. -
Hitler became Chancellor of Germany on January 30th of 1933. This was after a series of political maneuvers and electoral gains by the Nazi Party. He was appointed by President Paul von Hindenburg. President Paul von Hindenburg was pressured by conservative elites who believed they could control Hitler and the Nazis. This appointment was a legal though a highly significant one that allowed Hitler to dismantle Germanys democratic institutions and establish a totalitarian dictatorship. -
The CCC means the Civilian Conservation Corps. It also was created on April 5th of 1933 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was made for the New Deal program which was used to provide jobs for unemployed young men during the Great Depression. The CCC’s main purpose was to provide work relief for young men and to conserve and restore the nations natural resources. -
The WPA means the Works Progress Administration. It was created on May 6th on 1935. It was made for the New Deal agency so it could provide jobs for the millions of unemployed Americans during the Great Depression. The WPA put people to work on public projects like constructing roads, buildings, and parks, and also funded projects in the arts. The WPA’s goal was to boost employment and to stimulate the economy by shifting away from the direct relief to job creation. -
J.J. Braddock won the heavyweight boxing title on June 13, 1935. He defeated the reigning champion Max Baer in a major upset. Braddock was considered a 10 to 1 underdog but he won by an unanimous 15 round decision. He ended up earning the nickname of “Cinderella Man”. He ended up losing the title to Joe Louis in 1937. -
The Olympic Games in Berlin was the 1936 summer Olympics and it was held in a city under Nazi rule and marked by controversy over a potential boycott. The games were notable for the athletic achievements of Jesse Owen’s and other American Athletes who defied Nazi propaganda. This was also the last Olympics before World War II which caused a 12 year hiatus before the next games in 1948.

Kristallnacht or also known as the Night of Broken Glass was a states sponsored series of violent anti Jewish programs that took place throughout Nazi Germany, annexed Austria, and the Sudetenland on November 9th and the 10th of 1938. And this event is considered a crucial turning point and and prelude to the Holocaust. It marked a shift from legal and social discrimination to large scale physical violence. -
The Grapes of Wrath was published on April 14th in 1939. It was written by John Steinbeck and the novel is a work of social realism that chronicles the migration of Oklahoma’s Dust Bowl families to California during the Great Depression. -
The Wizard of Oz had a series of premieres which started with early test screenings in August 1939 and the official world premiere was on August 12th 1939 in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin which was followed by the Hollywood premiere on August 15th 1939 at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. The national release across U.S. Theaters took place on August 25th 1939. -
Germany invaded Poland on September 1st of 1939 to begin its expansionist policy in Eastern Europe. This invasion was preceded by Nazi propaganda that falsely accused Poland of persecuting ethnic Germans and claiming the country was about to attack Germany. This invasion is widely considered the start of WWII. -
The Four Freedoms speech was President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1941 state of the union address which called for the defense of four universal human freedoms which are the freedom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. The speech’s purpose was to explain the necessity of necessary of American involvement and aid to the Allied forces. It was to present a vision for a world based on these fundamental liberties.
