Thomas was born in Cincinnati Ohio. His early education was in Manhattan where independent thinking was the forefront of his education. He then attended Harvard and majored in physics he received a doctorates in 1949 -
Thomas taught philosophy of science at four different schools over forty years he taught at Harvard university, Berkeley university, Princeton university, and MIT in that order.

Thomas wrote his first book in which he combines his love for physics for his blossoming interest in the philosophy in science. He examined the heliocentric theory and how it evolved through the renaissance.
