Tape 1 - Side A
Hannah's first kiss is how it all started.
Hannah moved to a new town, a new school, hoping to start over and be who she really wanted to be. But then, Justin Foley happened. Hannah finally got her first kiss, but at school she started hearing the rumours. Rumours that Justin spead, rumours that weren't true. The rumours got worse and suddenly, Hannah had a reputation. -
Tape 1 - Side B
When Hannah first moved, she didn't know any one at school yet and started going to a cafe called Monet's. There, she started hanging out with Alex and Jessica, who were new also. They didn't hangout outside Monet's, it was their place. Alex and Jessica started dating, and then had a falling out. To get back at Jessica, Alex created The Hot and Not List. On the list, he named Hannah Best Ass and Jessica Worst. Hannah lost her two friends because of this, and it added to her reputation. -
Tape 2 - Side A
After The Hot and Not list came out, rumours started to spead again about Hannah. Jessica, believeing them, bitched Hannah out at Monet's and slapped her. Hannah lost her best friends, and her special place. -
Tape 2 - Side B
Hannah started to feel unsafe in her own home, the only place she didn't have to worry about rumour. The feeling came on when she found out she was being watched. Tyler Down had been hiding outside her window, watching her, taking pictures. He took from her her only safe place she had left. Courteney Crimson, number 5, helped her catch him. -
Tape 3 - Side A
Courteney Crimson, the girl who helped Hannah with the Tyler issue, turned out to just be using her. She was using Hannah to keep her good girl reputation, when really she was any thing but. She ended up making a rumour that she had 'naughty things' in her drawer, which she didn't. Hannah lashed out and took a picture with Courteney at a party, ultimately telling her she knew what she was. -
Tape 3 - Side B
After the matching test at school, Hannah has a date set with a boy named Marcus Cooley at Rosies diner. Hannah gets there and ends up waiting forever, thinking hes not showing is about to leave but he gets there just in time. They end up going to the back booth, and Marcus puts the moves on Hannah. Without her consent. She ends up pushing him to the floor to make him stop, he calls her a tease loud enough for everyone to hear and leaves. -
Tape 4 - Side A
After Marcus leaves, Zach Dempsey comes over to her table and tries to consol her. She wont talk, cant talk. He felt regected and embarrassed, since the whole point of him coming over was probably because his friends dared him. Feeling like this, he starts stealing Hannahs note of encouragement, which she needed very greatly, from her bag in class. She finds out, and it leads to an emotional breakdown in the hall. -
Tape 4 - Side B
Hannah starts going to a poetry club, hoping it will bring up her spirits. She meets Ryan Shaver, and they exchange poetry. Ryan ends up stealing the first peom she wrote after she started to consider suicide. He published it. -
Tape 5 - Side A
Clay fnally gets to his part. Hannah just explains that he had no part in her decision, that she only wanted him to know what happened and she wanted to apologize for letting him leave and not letting him in. For everything. -
Tape 5 - Side B
After Hannah broke down after kissing Clay and telling him to leave, she was sitting beside the bed when she hears Justin bring in Jessica. Jessica was too drunk and was 'unresponsive' so he left. But then she hears Justin talking to Bryce, and he lets him in the room. Hannah was able to hide in the closet. She witnesses her old friend Jessica get raped. Hannah felt it was her fault because her world was falling apart and she didnt have enough strength to stop it from happening. -
Tape 6 - Side A
Hannah, being in th econdition she was, gets a ride home with Jenny Kurtz. Jenny was intoxicated, and Hannah wanted her to pull over, but she refused and they argued. They end up hitting a stop sign and Jenny refuses to call the police about it. Hannah doesnt call the police either because her world was falling apart, still. They leave, leaving the sign down, which results in the death of a classmate. Hannah blames herself. -
Tape 6 - Side B
Hannah gave into her reputation. Not once had she ever gave in, she held strong to who she was, until Bryce. Hannah let what people saw her as become her that night with Bryce. By that point, Hannah was ready to give up, and by becoming what people thought she was, she was able to finally do that. -
Tape 7 - Side A
Hannah was at the point where nothing mattered anymore. She was prepared to take her own life. But she gave life one more chance. She gave someone a chace to save her. Hannah goes to Mr. Porter and admits to wanting to kill herself. He told her she may just need to get over some things, So, she ran from his office without explaining what she would do, he didnt go after her. This made up her mind. -
After
After listening to all these tapes, Clay has a new understanding. The book ends with Clay noticing some of the signs of being suicidal in this girl Skye that was introdiced earlier in the book. He goes after her.
