The Turn of the Screw

    The story begins with Douglas a man at a christmas party, giving background information on the Governess and then begins the story. The Governess arrives at Bly and begins her new job. She begins her job as the Governess of the niece and nephew of an unknown man. The Governess then goes on to meet the maid named Mrs. Grose, and the niece of her employer which is named Flora.

    As the Governess begins to start her new life as the governess of a man's niece and nephew, something unexpected happens. The nephew named Miles is expelled. The Governess receives a letter from Miles's headmaster with no explanation of his expulsion. Worried about the news, she asks Mrs. Grose about Miles but then is reassured.
  • Rising Action

    The tension in the story builds as the Governess sees a figure on top of a tower,and she claims it is a man. Soon after she sees him once again through a window and feels haunted. The figure the Governess sees is discovered to be a man named Peter Quint. The problem with this discovery is that Peter Quint is dead.
  • Turning Point

    The Governess sees a ghost and believes it is the ghost Miss Jessel. She also becomes paranoid and begins to think that the children are working with the ghost. The Governess mainly suspects Flora (niece) of cooperating with the ghost. The Governess's doubt of the kids raises the tension in the novel.
  • Falling Action

    The suspicion the Governess has towards Flora causes Flora to become sick and leave with Mrs. Grose. With their departure the Governess is left alone with Miles, and she believes Miles is being haunted by ghosts. Together alone in the house they face Quint one last time. The Governess grabs Miles and holds him tightly in her arms.
  • Resolution

    The conflict does not directly get resolved, but there is a sudden concluding event. For starters quint appears one last time and disappears after. Also Miles’s heart tragically stops, and he dies while the Governess is holding him. His death is unclear and sudden leaving one question which is; was the Governess insane and kill miles or were there really ghosts and miles died tragically? All in all the Governess is left alone inside the house with the body of Miles concluding with the novel.
