Katie Matsuno was born to Kiichi and Hikari Matsuno in Montebello, CA.

Katie's mom was a stay-at-home mom until she divorced Katie's dad when she (Katie) was 4. Since she was a stay-at-home mom she was able to respond to both her children's needs much more. Therefore they were able to develop a more secure attachment to her. As a single mother, Katie's mom became more of an Authoritarian and would expect her rules to be followed without any explanation.

After Katie's parents got divorced her mother enrolled her in Preschool at Lumbini Child Development Center. This is where Katie's first experience with formal learning took place. She was able to build positive relationships with other children, as well as adults, and develop better social skills.

In 2001 Katie's parents enrolled her in San Gabriel Academy for elementary school. Katie was able to develop a lot of good friendships during her time at San Gabriel Academy. San Gabriel Academy was a Seventh Day Adventist school, and Katie's family was Buddhist. It was during her time at San Gabriel Academy that Katie started to understand the theory of mind, as well as start to develop her own identity.

In 2002 Katie's parents transferred her to another elementary school for personal reasons. She went from attending a private school to a public school much closer to her house. At the new school, she had to make new friends, and get adjusted to the new teachers as well. She had to build new relationships, and find out what her identity at this new school was going to be.

In 2003, Katie's mom started to date a man named Derek. Derek moved into their home eventually. It took some time for Katie and her sister to get used to a new adult in the house, and it took a while for Derek to adjust as well. Derek's style of parenting was more of an Authoritative approach. He set clear rules, explained them, and also engaged in discussions with the girls. This helped Derek and the girls to build a very good relationship.

In 2009 Katie's family moved from California to Hawaii. It was a sudden move, and they only had 15 days to pack. It was life-changing and scary. Katie would be moving to a new place, and a new school again. She would have to make new friendships and find her identity in her new environment.

On June 21st, 2011, Katie's mom and step-dad, Derek had a baby. His name was Aiden. Katie, who was the youngest sibling until now, was now an older sister. During this time she would be taking on new responsibilities, and identifying her role as a new big sister.

In 2013 Katie graduated from Pearl City High School. This was a huge milestone for her, and for many individuals as well. This signifies taking the next step into young adulthood.
