At age twelve, Ayn Rand witnessed the Russian Revolution; her fisrt sight of collectivism. The communists took over the country and began to forcefully take away property from the "rich" or "well-off" in the name of the poor, working class. Her family almost lost everything to the government, and she was almost expelled from the university for not being like everyone else.

In 1926, Ayn Rand escaped Soviet Russia and headed to America to "visit relatives." The Soviet authorities thought that her visit would be short, but she had planned to never return.

Ayn Rand began writing "The Fountainhead" in 1935. In the midst of her writing, she decided to stop working on "The Fountainhead" for awhile, and write her novellete, Anthem.
