The Death of Deborah Owens
On this day Lily's mother had died. Lily was only about four years old and she witnessed her own mother's death. T-Ray and Deborah were fighting and Lily came into the room. Deborah grabbed for a gun on the top shelf but then it dropped to the floor. Lily waddled over to it and picked it up. The trigger went off and the bullet pierced through her mother's body. -
May's Wall
August talks to Lily about how May is a little emotionally unstable. After May's twin April died she was in a state that she can feel pain of others and gets upset very easily. So August and June came up with a way for her to deal with it. In Jeruslem there is a wall where the Jewish people can go with their prayers or to mourn this is called a wailing wall. May has constructed her own wailing wall and whenever she is upset she can go out there and mourn. -
Signing of the Civil Rigts Act
On July 2, 1964 The Civil Rights Act was signed into law. Lyndon B. Johnson signed this document on live T.V. The whole time Rosaleen was watching in anticipation. The Civil RIghts Act would allow black people to vote and have their civil rights. -
Lily Runs Away From Home
T-Ray had just come to get Lilly from jail. When they got home T-Ray yells and Lily and that is when she finally talks back. He tells Lily that her mother left them and that she never loved Lily. She didn't want to believe T-Ray. In the middle of the night, she grabbed her mothers things and some money and headed out the door. She left a note for her father that made him really angry. Lily ran away but first had to get Rosaleen out of jail. -
Rosaleen Gets Arrested
Lily and Rosaleen were walking into town where Roslaeen would register to vote. As they are walking along they were approached by three men. They were yelling racial slurs and other nasty things at Rosaleen. She casually walked along and pured her snuff juice all over the men's shoes. A police officer was summonded and Rosaleen was arrested for "disturbing the peace" and "assualt". -
Lily and Rosaleen Leave Sylvan
Lily went into the police station and found out that Rosaleen was staying at the hospital. The three men who had call the police on Rosaleen had beaten her up when Lily left. So Lily went to the hospital and found Rosaleen in the black section. There was an officer there and a receptionist. Lily went to a payphone and called the police officer. She told him they needed him at the station, so he left. Lily found Rosaleen and snuck her out. They then headed for Tirboun, South Carolina. -
The Boatwright Sisters
Lily found out who made the black madonna honey and left for their house. Rosaleen and Lily came upon the pink house and knocked on their door. June Boatright answered the door, she was the sister of the woman who made the honey. August Boatwright then came and let them in.They talked and Lily made up a lie of why she left home and how she came to be at their house. After hearing this August gave Lily and Rosaleen work to do around their house and also shelter. -
Lily and Rosaleen's Trip
From the hospital they went onto the highway. Lily was set on going to Tiburon because her mother had a picture and on the back was written Tiburon, South Carolina. A nice cantalope farmer had picked them off the side of the road and had dropped them off three miles from Tiburon. They stayed by a creek for about a night and went into town the next morning. They came to a store and Lily spotted a jar of honey that had the same picture her mother had of the black madonna.
