  • Missouri Compromise

    Effort to diffuse sectional political rivalries caused by Missouri's request to enter as a slave state. By entering as a slave state, balance of slave and free states would shift.
  • Mexican American War

    After winning the war, the U.s received all of California, Nevada, and Utah and parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming which raised the issue of slavery. This war led to the Compromise of 1850.
  • Wilmont Proviso

    Proposal to prohibit slavery in the territory the U.S received after the Mexican War. This fueled the problems between North and South because it would tip the balance.
  • Compromise of 1850

    This compromise settled the four year political rivalry between slave and free states by putting implementing things such as the Fugitive Slave Law. This compromise prevented the South's secession for awhile.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    Gave slaveholders legal ways to capture runaway slaves. The act aided in convincing many unsure northerners to anti-slaery.

    Anti-slavery novel by American author Harriet Stowe that had a big effect on attitudes towards slavery. It had an effect in the election of Abraham Lincoln.

    Allowed each territory to decide to be a slave or free state based on popular sovereignty.
  • Le Compton Constitution

    Le Compton Constitution
    Permitted slavery, excluded free blacks from living in Kansas, and allowed only white men to vote, creating a government supportive of slavery.
