    Eugenia put her daughter, Josephine, into the care of a woman in Sydney, Australia. She began to present herself to the world as a man called Harry Leo Crawford.

    Harry and Annie set up a confectinary shop in Balmain. He told her he was a 38-year-old widower. They were married February 19, 1913. It is unclear whether Annie knew her husband was not a man. According to neighbors, they fought often, especially when Eugenia's daughter returned.

    Harry and Annie went on a vacation in 1917 from which Annie did not return. On October 2, a woman's body, that had been burned and beaten, was discovered. According to Harry, his wife had left him. He did not report her missing. He moved to inner Sydney with his stepson and his daughter, Josephine, moved out.     On September 29, 1919, Harry is married to Elizabeth King Allison.

    The revelation that Harry was a woman created a media sensation. At his preliminary hearing he appeared as a man. However, at the trial in October, he dressed as a woman. He was convicted and condemned to death, but the sentence was commuted.
