  • Thomas Edison's completion of the First Phonograph

    On August 12th,1877 Thomas Edison completed his invention of the First Phonograph. Thomas Edison developed this invention while actually working on another invention, the telegraph. Edison was trying to improve his invention of the telegraph when he noticed that the movement of a paper tape through the machine made noise resembling words. He gave a sketch of the machine to his mechanic who built the invention within 30 hours and the invention of the first phonogrsph was complete
  • Edison presents his invention to the offices of Scientific American

    On December 22nd, 1877 Thomas Edison presented his new invention to the offices of "Scientific American" in New York City. They were very impressed with what Edison had made. Their was great interest in the invention and the invention was reported in many New York newspapers. It was also later reported in other American newspapers and magazines.
  • Edison files for a patent on his new machine

    Edison filed for a patent on his new invention on December 24th, 1877. The patent for his invention was issued on Febuary 19th, 1878
  • The Edison Speaking Phonograph company is established

    The Edison Speaking Phonograph company was established on January 24th,1878 to sell his new invention by dispaying and exhibiting it. Edison received $10,000 for the manufactering and sales rights. He also got 20% of the profits. The machine was a great success right away
  • Edison offered future uses for the Phonograph in "North American Review"

    Edison offered future uses for the Phonograph in "North American Review" in June of 1878. He ilsted things lke dictation, reproduction of music, toys and music-boxes, the preservation of languages, and educational purposes.
  • Edison Phonograph company is formed

    Edison didn't continue to work on the phonograph for about a decay since 1878 because of work on the light bulb. After the invention of the ligtbulb was complete he resumed work on the phonograph. When Edison was not working on the phonograph, others continued to improve it. Edison now continued work on the phonograph and his work followed improvments made by other scientists and he called his work the new phonograph. The Edison Phonograph Company was formed on 10/8/87 to market his invention.
  • Edison introduced an improved phonograph

    Thomas Edison introduced the improved Phonograph by May of 1888. Not too long after introducing the ivmproved phonograph he introduced the New Phonograph. The first wax cylinders Edison used were made of Ceresin, beeswax, and stearic wax.
