The Marine Corps sent marines to a small island called Iwo Jima. Japan needed Iwo Jima to prolong the war. After 36 days of fighting the marines took over the island. During the battle the marines took a flag to the top of the island's largest mountian, Mt. Suribachi where they raised a U.S. flag.
