Matilde is a middle class woman with a husband that works in a government building that manages to get his hands on some tickets tat are to a very high-end party. Matilde is then very upset as she has no nice dresses or jewelry for the party so the husband gives her 400 francs and tells her to borrow a necklace from a friend.

Matilde is at the party looking very nice with her new dress and her expensive necklace that her friend let her borrow, the husband is sleeping in a side room on a couch with other gentlemen.

After leaving the party and looking for a carriage to take them home but after getting into the carriage they realize they lost the necklace that they borrowed and the husband then goes back and looks for it till later that day

They look for a replacement and find one for 36,000 francs which they buy which unfortunately leads to them being in debt for the next 10 years which leads the once gorgeous Matilde to look old and rugged like a lower class family. one Sunday Matilde sees her friend on the street explains the whole ordeal and they she says that the necklace was a fake and only worth 500 francs.
