    Matilde is a young woman who struggles with her place in society. She is married to a clerk named Monsieur Loisel. They are fairly well off yet she wants more.

    Matilde is going to party with her rich friends and wants to look nice, so she makes her husband buy her a beautiful dress. She wants jewelry but her husband can't afford it so she asks her friend Madame Forestier for a necklace, the necklace she borrows is 36,000 francs.

    She goes to the party and everyone thinks she looks beautiful. She lost the necklace at the party and is devastated. Mathilde and her husband try searching for it but they have no luck. Mathilde doesn't know what to do.
