    Theme Statement
    In life you have to be strong and independent to go through traumatic events.
  • Her father died

    Her father died
    Her father had died, her rock, her pillar had crashed.
    This was turning point because her father was one of the few people she could depend on and he was no longer there. This had a negative impact but she learned to be stronger in the long run.
    She had learned to be more stronger person and step up to take care of her family. This shows that she is becoming a strong and independent woman.
  • Secret Identity

    Secret Identity
    During this time she had gotten a secret identity as a Christian woman named Grete.
    This had a positive impact on her because this was the one of the two ways she survived.
    This contributes to the idea of Edith becoming a strong independent woman because she had the courage to play it very carefully and find ways to stay alive.
  • Werner Vetter

    Werner Vetter
    Werner is a Nazi party member and he knows her as Grete, the Christian woman. But after some time they fall in love and she tells him her real identity.
    This was had a positive impact on Edith because she would finally find someone she loves and would have someone to depend on even if she didn't need it.
    This contributes to the theme because she decided to be strong and face what ever consequences there might be.

    Werner was drafted
    During this time Werner was drafted.
    Werner had left Grete and Angela, their child, to fend for themselves.
    Thsi relates to the theme because she was an independent woman during this time ,as she decided to get a job and help her family stay alive.
  • Bombing in Brandenburg

    Bombing in Brandenburg
    The Allies bombed Brandenburg causing destruction to apartments, stores and the streets. They left the bunker and Grete went from house to house weeping and begging for help because Angela was ill.
    This was turning point because this changed the direction of her mindset. which was that she will always be protected.
    This relates to the theme because she had to be strong not, only for her self but for her daughter.
  • Werner and Edith get divorced

    Werner and Edith get divorced
    When Werner gets back from the war he gets mad that she doesn't cook or clean for him. They get divorced.
    This had a positive impact on Edith because it is at this moment she realizes she isn't Grete she is Edith. If all this time she raised her kid without Werner she doesn't need him now either.
    This relates to the theme because she is not only strong enough to
    get the divorce, she is remembers she doesn't need a man dragging her down and stopping her from being independent.
