Alyce finds the cats after she finishes collecting nuts and threatens them with blackberry juice that if she pours it on them they will turn into women.

The midwife attempt to deliver the baby, but gets a better offer and atteneds it instead, leaving Alyce with bayliff's wife. Aylce can't leave her be in pain so she delivers it.The baby then is given the name Little Alyce.

Alyce goes to the barn and finds a orphan little boy about 6 called Runt. She names him, Edward, and feeds him a little then sends him to the manor where he can stay as long as he works.

One morning Matthew Blut was sent to fetch Alyce to deliver his mother's baby.

Alyce fails to deliver the baby because it is stuck in the wrong position so she gets the midwife, though having failed she is ashamed and leaves.

Alyce meets Magester Reese who is a very important person. He can read and write!

Magester Reese teached the cat to read and write because he knows Alyce is listening and she is learning slowly. He doesn't approch her directly though because she is shy.
