The Pre-Classic Period was the beginning of the Mayan Civilization. It was a time of change and invention. New advances in agriculture and carved stone, stele, began to appear in this era.

The Classic Period was considered the Golden Age of the Maya. Cities were developed including Tikal, Uaxactún, Copán, Bonampak, Dos Pilas, Calakmul, Palenque and Río Bec. Each city held a population of between 5,000 and 50,000 people.

Around the year 600 A.D., an unknown event destroys the civilization at Teotihuacan. Also, the city-state Tikal becomes the largest city-state in Mesoamerica with approximately 500,000 inhabitants.

The Decline of the Mayan Civilization was when all of the main cities of Maya were abandoned. It was also a period of warfare, political disarray, and disorder.
