In the month of May in 1521 there is a turning point in Ignatius' life. During the Battle of Pamplona, Ignatius gets hit with a cannonball and is sent to Loyola to recover. While there he is insprired by the book 'De Vita Christi' written by Ludolf of Saxony.

Ignatius travels to the Benedictine Monastery, Santa Maria de Montserrat. There he then went to the city of Manresa and spent several months in a cave where he practiced very much prayer. This is where he made the spiritual exercises.

Ignatius finally passes away. He had a fever and the day before asked for the last sacraments and a papal blessing. He then dies peacefully in prayer.

On this date in 1609, Ignatius is beatified which means he is one blessing away from being a saint.

Ignatius is canonized by Pope Gregory XV.
