In 1960, one of the most powerful earthquake hits Valdivia, Chile. Rocking at magnitude of about 8.5 for about 4 hours. Leaving 2 million people homeless and killing 5,000 people. This was one of the greatest earthquake's ever recorded. Being so close to the ocean, wave were rolling in at a towering 26 feet tall. Minutes later, a slower 35 foot wave came rolling in. On September 1, 1983, the airliner serving the flight was shot down by a Soviet Su-15 interceptor near Moneron Island, west of Sakhalin Island, in the Sea of Japan. The interceptor's pilot was Major Gennadi Osipovich. All 269 passengers and crew aboard were killed, including Lawrence McDonald, a sitting member of the United States Congress.
