    Germany, Italy and Japan- Axis powers.
    Russia, United States and Great Britain- Main Allies (+ many other smaller counties).
    Fought in two theatres, Pacific and European.

  • Independence Movements Begin

    African, Asian and Middle Eastern countries begin to vie for independence from colonial powers.

    Middle East Independence Movements

    Middle East, Syria and Lebanon from France 1944. Iraq, Israel- 1948, India -1947 from Britain- 1948.
    **Begins tensions between Arabs and Jews in Israel.

  • World War 2 Ends

    World War 2 ends with the atomic bombimg of Japan.
    United Nations is formed with 5 permament members: Great Britain, France,United States, Russia and China.

  • Cold War Begins

    Directly related to Independence Movements.
    Two main superpowers on winning side of WWII. Unites States vs. Soviet Union. (Democracy vs. Communist). Both countries worried that many newly independent countries would follow other opposite form of government. Domino effect would occur.

  • Korean War Begins

    United States involement was in The Korean War was a direct result of The Cold War.
    North Korea was communist backed by Soviets. South Korea was democracy, backed by United States.

  • Korean War Ends

    Korean War ends with Korean Armistice Agreement. The north would remain communist, the south would remain democracy. Each would exist as seperate countries.

  • Vietnam War Begins

    Civil War. North Vietnam communists. South Vietnam democratic.
    N. Vietnam invades S. Vietnam after S. Vietnam refuses to hold democratic election.

    34 African countries gain thier independence from France and Britain.
    1960- Year of Africa- Over 17 countries gain independence.

  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Directly related to Cold War.
    Fidel Castro gains power. Us tries to covertly overthrow Castro but fails. Cuba turns to Russia for help.

  • United States Enters Vietnam

    U.S sends troops to VIetnam to fight for S. Vietnam.

  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Directly related to Cold War.
    In exchange for support, Cuba agrees to have Russain nuclear missile's in Cuba, pointed at United States.

  • Vietnam War Ends

    Peace agreements begin. Nothing was solved. Same situation as before war began.

  • North Vietnam invades South Vietnam

    Due to public pressure for no interference, United States does nothing. South Vietnam becomes communist.

    Iraq invades Kuwait. Ignores United Nations. Assault by United States. Operation "Desert Storm".

  • End of Cold War

    Soviet Union fails. Berlin Wall falls 1989. Tiananmen Square Massacre 1989.

  • 1st Persian Gulf War Ends

    Short war. Iraq leaves Kuwait. Sets stage for second Persian gulf war.

  • Terroists Attack United States

    Al Queda, ran by Bin Laden, issues war against U.S. 4 planes hijacked. Two ran into World Trade Centers in NYC. 1 hit Pentagon. 4th plane overtaken and crashed in field. Aimed for military, government and commerce. Symbolized an attack on global commerce dominated by the west.

  • 2nd Persian Gulf War Begins

    U.s accuses Saddam Hussein of harboring WMD's. Only U.S and Britain invade. Kill Hussein, no weapons found.

    Arab Spring

    Involved over 20 countries. Protesting to remove dictators and authoritarian regimes and perpetrators of human rights violations.

  • 2nd Persian Gulf War Ends

    U.s attempts to help set up new democratic government in Iraq. Pulls out of country in 2011.
