The Korean War

    Stalin using Cominform to aid in the over-take of Malaya, Indonesia, Burma, the Philippines and Korea.

  • Northern half of Korea remains under Communist control with Communist leader (dictatorship).

  • Southern half of Korea is anti-Communist. US begins to support South Korea because of this.

  • Hostility between North Korean leader (Kim Il Sung) and South Korean leader (Syngman Rhee).

    US government dedicate $2 billion in aid into supporting Chinese nationalists.

  • China becomes communist following Soviet take-over of eastern Europe.

  • Period: to

    Communist ideology spreading around the world. Communism getting stronger.

  • Period: to

    US President McCarthy leads 'whitch hunt' in America to find communist sympathisers and spies.

  • Relationship between North and South Korea becomes hostile and war breaks out. North Korean troops invade the South and take all but a small section of the South-East of South Korea.

  • Truman (US President) sends supplies, advisers and warships to Korea, in order to aid the South.

  • Period: to

    Truman puts pressure on UN Security Council to condemn North Korean actions. At the same time USSR tries to use their right to veto to block Truman's call. USSR has boycoted the UN however.

  • US has influence over decisions made by UN. UN now dedicated to forcing North Korean troops out of South Korea.
