  • Sgt. Floyd becomes the first U.S. soldier to die west of the Mississippi River

  • Encountered the first Indians met on the trip

  • Hired Charbonneau and his wife, Sacagawea, to accompany them

  • Lewis became the first white man to see the Great Falls

  • With the new horses from the Shoshones, they set off through the Rockies

  • Clark writes that he can see the ocean, even though its 20 miles away

  • The group votes on where to spend the winter

    The decide to spend the winter at Fort Clatsop

  • In Washington, President Jefferson meets with Cheifs sent by Lewis and Clark

    The Missouri, Oto, Arikara, and Yankton Sioux Chiefs all attend this meeting

  • The expedition leaves Fort Clatsop and starts home

  • Lewis and Clark split to find an easier route

    Lewis follows the Missouri River and Clark follows the Yellowstone River to try to find an easier route over the Rockies

  • The team arrives back in St. Louis
