    Invented the telephone. The telephone changed the world. It created new jobs for women, people could talk to other cities and countries and not having to wait on mail to receive news.   • Thomas Edison

    Thomas Edison
    Invented electric/lighting. Lighting and electricity changed the way businesses and homes ran. Business could now run 24 hours a day with lighting. Electricity spurred the invention of electrical equipment, which allowed more leisure time, transportation. Better transportation allowed people to move out of cities and business could now be anywhere.

    1897 Boston Opened Americas first subway called the Trenton Street Subway. This new way of transportation provided another alternate route of transportation that was faster, easier, and avoided the congestion on the streets.

    Alfred Ely Beach’s subway design opened in New York City. This was the first underground subway in New York and ran approximately nine miles from City Hall to 145th street.     Reinvented the electric toaster. The toaster, toasted one side of the bread at a time, and had to be unplugged when the toast was done. This machine made life easier because people did not have to make a fire to toast bread, nor get near a fire and hold the bread with a toaster fork.

    Helped set up America’s first commercial broadcast station, KDKA. Maiden voyage November 2, 1920 and the station broadcast the Presidential results for the Harding-Cox candidacy. Stores with freezers were able to purchase bulk food and sell frozen food all year round which meant consumers would buy vegetables that were not in season year round.
