  • Rosa's death

    Rosa dies from a poisoned drink ment for her father. Clara does not speak until her 19th birthday.

  • Esteban Treuba begins seeing Pancha Garcia at Tres Marias

    He continues to see her until she becomes pregnant. He then becomes repulsed by her.

  • Great Depression

    The Great Depression affects the world. Chile is one of the hardest hit countries.

  • Radicals gain power in Chilé

    First Radical president Aguirre Cerda. He promotes education reform. Education is power.

  • Esteban has re-established Tres Marias

    He begins to take interest in local elections. An election is coming up and the local patrons tell their workers not to vote for the Communists. He also meets Transito Soto.

  • Clara gives birth to Blanca

    Blanca is a very bright young girl.

  • Gabriel González Videla becomes president of Chilé

    Gaberiel González Videla becomes president with the backing of many different political parties. While president Videla was pressured to pass ‘The Law of Permanent Defense of the Democracy’ which outlawed some of his communists allies.

  • Carlos Ibeañez Del Campo returns to the presidency

    Returns as president through elections ending the era of radical power. His Emblem was a broom which he intended to use to ‘sweep out the radical corruption’.

  • Ants plague Tres Marias

    Esteban and his new family spend a summer in Tres Marias when they are visited by an ant plague. Esteban tries everything to get rid of them but nothing works. Pedro Garcia's father is called in and he asks the ants to leave, and they do.

  • Snipe Incident

    Between Argentina and Chilé over a border dispute. Chilé build and light house on the islet Snipe, days after its completion Argentina destroyed it. Even though there was violence both countries eventually came to an agreement and Argentina withdrew from the islet. Part of the larger Beagle conflict.

  • Ferula dies

    After being kicked out of the house she is found dead by Clara. Esteban feels terrible because she did not use any money she sent him.

  • Great chilean earthquake (Novel and Chilé)

    The largest earthquake in recorded history measuring a 9.5.

  • Blanca gives birth to Alba

    Clara finds a star on Alba's back and says that she is born lucky.

  • Ediarda Frie Montalva becomes president of Chilé

    Won the Chilean presidential elections and proclaimed the ‘Revolution in Liberty’.

  • Communists gain power in Chilé

  • Clara dies

    She dies when Alba turns 17. Esteban builds a mausoleum to hold himself, Clara, and Rosa in death.

  • Socialists gain power in novel

  • Salvador Allende becomes president

    He brings new views into chilean government. Salvador Allende was elected president with less then 36% of the vote. His views are counter productive to the US so the US was displeased by the outcome of the election.

  • Alba is kidnapped

    She is taken to prison where Eseban Garcia is in charge. She is brutally tortured.

  • Gen. Augusto Pinochet proclaims himself "Supreme Cheif of the Nation"

    Chilean general Augusto Pinochet makes himself “Supreme Chief of the Nation” by overthrowing the current president (Allende) through the use of military might. The military regime led to around 130,000 arrests and the dead or mysterious disappearance of 2,000 others.
