The History of Video Games

  • PONG

    PONG
PONG was the worlds first known video game. It consists of two paddles, one for each player, and in this game you would try to get the ball/dot past the opposite players paddle. For many people, this game is still enjoyed around the world TODAY!
  • Pacman

    Pacman
Pacman, or Puckman as he was known in Japan, was undoubtedly the most addictiive game of the 80s. What's not to like, with the simple game mechanisms and likeable yellow pizza shaped character. The game was simple; eat all the dots and avoid the evil ghosts. Although not the best graphics, this game was unbelievably popular!
  • Donkey Kong

    Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong was, in much ways, the first great video game of our time. It consists of three main characters, Mario (or Jump-Man as he was known then), Donkey Kong (the villain), and Princess Peach ('damsel in distress'). It is a very good game, and the first of many sucessful games including Mario and Donkey Kong.
  • Frogger

    Frogger
Frogger, despite being not the most sought after game of its time, was unbelievably addictive and popular amongst its shallow(ish) fanbase. Made by Sega, this game consists of a frog, trying to cross the road. More exciting than it sounds though, as there are a stream of cars, constantly trying to run you over. In a word, fun!
  • Super Mario Bros.

    Super Mario Bros.
This is where it all started for all Mario fans, the first ever game where the famous 'Jump-Man' was the title character, Super Mario Bros. In this side-scrolling masterpiece - the first of it's kind - you control Mario, an Italian-American plumber, who tries to rescue the captive Princess Peach. This game was truly remarkable, well done Nintendo!
  • Street Fighter

    Street Fighter
Street Fighter: Everyones favourite fighting game! This classic, released in 1987 was an instant seller for the arcades, with a staggering amount of money being pumped into it. The game stars Ryu, a japanese martial arts champ, who fights and defeats 10 challengers, to become the ultimate street fighter!
  • Mortal Kombat

    Mortal Kombat
FATALITY! The word of the 90s came from this fabulous game. The original made by Midway focuses on the journey of the monk Liu Kang, to save Earth from the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung. In multiplayer, there were 7 playable characters, each with their own finishing Fatality. This game was just too good!
  • FIFA International Soccer

    FIFA International Soccer
FIFA International Soccer. Who knew what a success this game would turn out to be. The beginning of the worldwide phenomenon FIFA! Well, it turns out this game was amazing for its time, and that Electronic Arts' licences with FIFA and the top divisions in europe were second to none!
  • Video Game Ratings Introduced

    Video Game Ratings Introduced
1994 marked a tragic day for many 10 year olds playing Mortal Kombat! The introduction of ratings for video games was big, so big in fact that the GOVERNMENT had to chip in. So, even though this marked the end of younger kids playing gory games, it revelutionised the way people interpreted games, forever.
  • Grand Theft Auto

    Grand Theft Auto
Even though ratings had been introduced, kids still persuaded their mums or dads to buy them the latest game. But in my opinion, GTA changed that. With the car jacking and the inappropriate language etc. But aside all that, this game was unbelievable in what it achieved. And so Grand Theft Auto was born!
  • Call of Duty

    Call of Duty
The great first-person shooter which is all everyone talks about, CALL OF DUTY! People may wonder what the fuss is about, but its easy to see why its such a great game. Firstly, its killing people, which everyone wants to do on a video game, right? But more seriously, the game simulates the infantry and warfare of World War II, which is really fascinating if you ask me. So why not try looking at Call of Duty. You might just surprise yourself!
  • Grand Theft Auto 5

    Grand Theft Auto 5
Grand Theft Auto V is an adventure game developed and published by Rockstar Games. It is by far the most anticipated game in the series. It follows the story of 3 main characters, Michael, Franklin, and Trevor. You plan a series of heists and bank robberys, and generally make your own desisions, which is what makes it such a good game. In my opinion, this is the best game I have played, full stop!
  • FIFA 14

    FIFA 14
Yep, we're back to FIFA again, but this time, not only is it better, its brainier too. The game now has 2.5d visuals, player nitelligence and more importantly, better controls than its 1995 counterpart. I could go on forever talking about things such as the brand new physics engine, Ultimate Team, the brilliantly addictive game mode, or even things like as pure shot, the new part of the game which gives real life ball physics to shots and skill moves. But I won't, cause i've ran out of room!
  • Call of Duty Ghosts

    Call of Duty Ghosts
The last game on this timeline could well be the most anticipated! Call of Duty Ghosts will change your the way you depict games. Its just the realism which makes this game so good; the IW engine, which has been vastly improved since its launch, is great! But the reason everyones excited is because of the gameplay. The gripping storyline, the intense multiplayer. These are ingredients for a ground-breaking new game!
