Antonio Meucci, 1854, constructed telephone-like devices. Alexander Graham Bell was awarded the first U.S. patent for the invention of the telephone in 1876.

In 1877 the very first permanent outdoor telephone wire was completed

It stretched a distance of 3 miles.This was closely followed in the U.S. in the world's first commercial telephone service.
