The History of Schools

  • Massachusetts

    Every town in Massachusetts with fifty families should have an elementary school. As well, as every town with 100 families should have a Latin school. This was taught for children to read the Bible.
  • Pennsylvania

    This state calls for free public education but only for the poor children not the rich. Rich children will be paid by their parents.
  • 1820-1860

    The percentage of people who worked in agriculture plummets as a family were gobblers by a bigger agricultural business and that lead people to work in towns and the city. From 1846 to 1856 3.1 million immigrants arrived to the U.S. Industry needed obedient workforce.
  • Irish Immigrants

    More than a million Irish immigrants were driven out their homes and arrived in the U.S. The Irish catholic in NY City had trouble controlling schools. They were trying to find a way to prevent their children being taught a Protestant curriculum.
  • 1846

    James Polk who was President at time orders the invasion of Mexico. The war ends with Mexico giving the United States half of what was theirs. U.S now southwest which is Nevada, Wyoming and most of California and parts of Utah was given to them. The treaty was guaranteed citizenship in those areas and Spanish language.
  • Native Americans

    Native Americans were not allowed to be taught their Native language which congress made it illegal for them. Native children at the age of 4 were taken from their families off reservations to boarding school. They did that so they can “kill the Indian and save the man”
  • Louisiana

    The U.S Supreme Court accepts that the state of Louisiana can require “separate but equal” railroad cars for blacks and white. Which means that the federal gov. recognize segregation as legal. As well, as southern states can pass laws that require radical segregation in their public schools.
  • Little Rock

    Governor Orval Faunus sends his own national guards to physically prevent nine African American students from enrolling at a all white high school. Eisenhower also sends federal troops not too. The reason why he did that was because he didn’t want a states governor use military power to defy the U.S. federal government.
  • California

    California passed proposition 187. This means it’s illegal for children of undocumented immigrants to attend public school. This proposition was held as unconstitutional but anti immigrant.
  • Santa Fe Independent School District

    3 students sued the school over a student using the school loud speaker and saying a prayer before a football game. Although, the attendance was voluntary and the prayer was lead by a student they used the school speaker to say the prayer. This did not violate the First Amendment but the Court still held the school responsible because the loud speaker was owned by the school.
  • College and Universities

    Colleges and Universities have interest in promoting diversity. Barbara Grutter stated that her equal rights were violated. The University of Michigan Law School attempt to have a diverse student but they only denied her application.
  • Sheff v. O’Neill

    Students in Hartford, Connecticut argued that the schools were segregated. White children were gives better resources than the minority student. As well, as minority students were living separate from the city and whites in the suburbs. The states Supreme Court ordered to fix segregation and the following years after the diversity of students in Hartford had increased.
