The Haitian Revolution

  • Beginning of Revolution

    Slaves in Saint Domingue revolt and an important person in this revolt is Dutty Boukman, who was a former slave/voodoo priest that organized this whole rebellion. This point in time is also thought as the start of the Haitian Revolution.
  • Saint Domingue problem

    While France was at war back home, other countries like Spain and Britain try to take advantage of Saint Domingue and takeover the French colony.
  • Louverture Event

    Louverture was a rebel leader and he joined Spain to take down the French and get back the colony while also restablishing slavery.

    Louverture joins French forces .

    Spain gives back spanish colony (aka Ssanto Domingo) to France.

    Louverture and Rigaud move British people out of the island.
  • War of Knives

    Louverture and Rigaud fight it out for control of the island.

    War of Knives ends and Louverture is the leader of the colony.
  • New Constitution

    Louverture makes a new constitution for Saint Domingue it stops slavery and gives equal rights to everyone. The constitution also outlaws voodoo, makes Louverture leader for life, and considers all people in Saint Domingue french citizens.
  • War for Independence

    French invaded Saint Domingue and due to the new constitution people were confused on which side to fight on.
    Also Dessalines joined the French which led to Louverture being tricked and then captured.

    War of Independence

    The people of Saint Domingue resisted the French and did't make any agreements with them.
  • End of Revolution

    Dessalines declares independence from France and makes himself emperor of Haiti
