The beginning of the Great Depression is often referred to as the dramatic crash of the stock market on "Black Thursday". On October 29th, 1929, 16 million shares of stock were sold by panicking investors, pretty much starting the Great Depression. -

The Dust Bowl
The Dust Bowl was a period of severe dust storms and droughts. It effected the Midwest severely and even when it was over, agriculture and the overall environment were pretty much just destroyed. It made it very hard to farm which was terrible especially since the Depression was going on. -

Hoovervilles
Hoovervilles were shantytowns named after President Herbert Hoover. They made these to help people that don't have jobs or money have a place to stay and to work. -
"The Worst is Behind Us."
On March 1st 1930, President Hoover is going to claim that "The worst is behind us." while talking about the Great Depression. During his presidency, he would keep saying that we past the worst that it could get. But this is obviously not true by seeing how long the depression lasted. -

The Hoover Dam
The Hoover Dam was built to protect southern California and Arizona from the floods from Colorado. It was also built to control flooding, generate electricity, and provide water for irrigation and municipal use. -

Food Riot's
In Minneapolis, Food Riot's started to break out because of the stock market crashing. People would smash the windows of grocery markets and would steal food or just anything that they could get. It was a desperate attempt by people facing hunger and really anyone who was affected in a negative manor by the Great Depression. -
Election of 1932
The election of 1932 is when Democratic Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt defeated Republican incumbent president Herbert Hoover. Roosevelt beat Hoover in a landslide. Roosevelt was a big help to end the Great Depression. -

The New Deal
The New Deal is a series of programs initiated by President Roosevelt. The policies that he implemented aimed to combat the Great Depression and help more Americans get jobs. (didn't start exactly on the first but in march, cant get exact date) -
Unemployment Rate Peak
On March 4th, 1933, the unemployment rate will peak and hit 25%. Consumer prices fell 25% and wholesale prices fell 32%. -
Emergency Banking Act
The EBA (Emergency Banking Act) it was a landmark piece of legislation. It was supposed to stabilize the nation's banking system by halting bank runs and restoring public confidence. -
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was to provide employment to young men. It aimed to combat unemployment while addressing issues like deforestation and the need for park and forest development. -

The Second New Deal
The Second New Deal, a period spanning from 1935-1936, it was a continuation to the first new deal, but it had a greater focus on social and economic reforms. It included the Social Security Act, the National Labor Relations Act, the Wealth Tax Act, etc. -
Black Sunday
The "Black Sunday" was one of the storms during the dust bowls, but this one was a lot worse and had a lot of people thinking that their houses and crops were gonna get destroyed. It caused people in the Midwest area to fear the world was ending. It had terrible effects on the economy and just nature in general. -
Works Progress Administration (WPA)
The WPA was a New Deal agency that was to provide relief to unemployed American by creating jobs and working on public projects. It employed millions of people in various fields, including construction, arts, and cultural projects. -
Unemployment Rate Reduced
In May during 1937 the unemployment rate was down to 14.3%, the lowest it had been since the 25.0% in 1933. Some thought that the Depression was over, but the next year the unemployment rate went back up to 19.0% -
The Official End of the Great Depression
The official end of the Great Depression and when America started to get back on their feet was with the start of WW2 and the mobilization of WW2. It created millions of jobs in defense industries and the military. Also the Selective Training and Service Act was passed on this day.
