The Walls Family moves to Welch, West Virginia to live with Rex's parents. They end up living in a shack on Little Hobart Street. They were poor, hungry, and dirty. Kids were always picking fights with the Walls children.

In 7th grade, Jeanette becomes a copy editor for the Wave, the high school paper. She sees outside news for the first time and realizes that there is more to the world than what her parents say.

After a summer of taking care of her family, her parents don't appreciate Jeanette's questioning of their parenting. She gets a whipping from her father and resolves that she must leave Welch as soon as possible. Lori comes back from camp and realizes she must leave Welch also.

After she graduates from high school, Lori moves to New York City even after Rex steals their escape fund to go get drunk.

After her junior year in high school, Jeanette escapes to New York City and lives with Lori. Brian and Maureen follow in 1978.

Rose and Rex come to New York and become homeless.

Jeanette graduates from college. Lori and Brian are successful adults. Rose and Rex remain homeless.
