Tomiko leaves Shuri
Tomiko's father left Shuri to deliver food to the Signal Corps. Tomiko and her family wait for three days for their father to return. Tomiko, Yoshiko, Hatsuko, and Chokuyu leave Shuri when they learn that fighting has begun there. They head towards Makabe, where their father works, hoping he might be there. -
Tomiko & family arrive in Makabe
Tomiko, Yoshiko, Hatsuko, and Chokuyu arrive in Makabe, where their father worked. He was not there. They asked to sleep in a house for the night but were turnedaway, so they slept in the cave. The next morning, Hatsuko reported that the house they were turned away from was destroyed by a bomb. -
Chokuyu is killed at Komesu
Tomiko, Yoshiko, Hatsuko, and Chokuyu arrive at Komesu Beach. They dig holes to sleep in, whiere they sleep sitting upright. Chokuyu is hit in the back of the head by a stray bullet and killed. He is quickly buried before Japanese soldiers rush Tomiko and her sisters off of the beach. -
Tomiko loses her sisters
Tomiko is seperated from her sisters in a crowd that was fleeing Komesu. Whilst proceeding to the hills, the crowd came under fire from a machine gun. The crowd was mostly killed, but Tomiko survived by taking shelter in a nearby house for the rest of the day. -
Tomiko meets Nini the Rabbit
Having taken cover in a field, Tomiko hid in a series of caves. Searching for food amongst dead soldiers and hiding in holes in a field of pampas grass. She one day hides in a hole where she discovers a rbit, whom she names Nini. The rabbit dissapears and the hole she was hiding in is soon bombed. She learns that areas with no animals are usually about to be bombed. -
Tomiko is attacked
Tomiko left the pampas field, determined to find her sisters. In her search of a cave, a Japanese soldiers attempted to kill her with a sword. She escaped through jumping down a cliff, just barely avoiding the soldier. -
Tomiko meets the old couple
Tomiko stumbles upon a cave in search of food. In her search of the cave, she finds an old couple. The old couple allows her to stay with them for a few days. Tomiko helps the old couple stay confortable in the cave and they provide Tomiko food to eat. -
Tomiko is reunited with sisters
The old couple rushes Tomiko out of the cave with a white flag. She reaches the beach where she is reunited with her sisters. She does not mention the old couple and her white flag is taken from her. She is sent with her sisters to an internment camp.
