Many important things happened in early 1940. At the beginning of the year, the Netherlands declared that they were neutral in the war, trying to avoid any reason to be attacked. The Germans also started planning to attack the Netherlands as a part of the plan to conquer France. The Belgium army hot their hands on the attack plans after a German aircraft made an emergency landing.

The Dutch army stood up the German army for three days, slowing down the invasion. The Grebbe line, the line of defense, fell on May 13th.

General Schimdt presents the Dutch with an ultimatum, surrender Rotterdam or the city will be bombed. The city was bombed and 600-900 people had been killed.
