    Conflict over domination in North America ends with no clear victor with the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle.
    Significance: With no clear victory, the American colonies would continue to unify against the French and Indians and a sense of American identity would continue to grow.

    Nov – December 1753:
    George Washington carries Virginia’s ultimatum over French encroachment to Captain Legardeau de Saint-Pierre at Riviere aux Boeufs. He rejects it.
    Significance: George Washington begins a military career which will allow him to hone the leadership skills to lead the Americans in the Revolutionary War.
  • Washington defeats French

    Washington defeats French
    Washington defeats French in a surprise attack (the first battle) and builds Fort Necessity.
    Significance: Washington's actions (at 22 yeras of age) inadvertently begin the French and Indian War.
  • The French Fight Back

    The French Fight Back
    The French capture Fort Necessity. Washington blamed for the loss of Fort Necessity, resigns. He will later return as a volunteer under British authority.

    Significance: Washington and other Americans begin to see a double standard between their treatment and the treatment of British Soldiers.
